Beach towel without sand: which fabric helps and 10 tips that work

A beach towel without sand – that sounds like a wish that never comes true by the sea. Indeed, no towel stays completely sand-free. But how much sand ends up in the car, the holiday flat and the washing machine is largely up to you. Two things are decisive: the fabric of your towel and a few simple habits at the beach. In this article we explain why sand sticks in the first place, which material is easiest to shake out and which tricks really work.

Why sand sticks to the beach towel

Sand clings for three reasons:

  • The fabric: terry consists of many small loops. Grains of sand slip in and get caught. The fluffier the towel, the more room for sand.
  • Moisture: wet sand sticks – to skin and fabric. If you step onto the towel with wet feet or lay a wet towel on the sand, you pick up much more.
  • Movement: every time you get up, sit down or turn over, you carry sand onto the towel. The wind does the rest.

The good news: you can tackle all three points.

Which fabric releases sand best?

Material is the biggest lever. An overview of common beach towel fabrics:

Fabric Sand Other properties
Terry (loops)Holds sand stronglyVery absorbent, soft, heavy, dries slowly
Velour (sheared terry)Slightly better than terry, but sand stays in the pileVelvety surface, often used for printed towels
Flat weave / hammam towelShakes out easilyLight, quick-drying, thin
MicrofibreSmooth versions release sand wellVery light, synthetic fibre, unusual feel on the skin

If you want a beach towel without sand – or at least with as little as possible – a flat-woven cotton towel is a good choice. It combines the advantages of a natural fibre with a smooth surface. 10 tips for a beach towel without sand

Before you lie down

  1. Choose the right spot: dry, firm sand higher up the beach sticks less than damp sand near the waterline. A sheltered spot behind a dune or windbreak stops sand being blown onto the towel.
  2. Lay it out with the wind: stand with your back to the wind and let the towel glide onto the ground in front of you. Then weigh down the corner facing the wind first.
  3. Weigh down the corners: bag, bottle and shoes on the corners – so the towel doesn't flap and scoop up sand from the edges.
  4. Always keep the same side up: don't turn the towel over during the day. The underside can be sandy, the top stays clean.

During the beach day

  1. Set up a foot zone: the bottom end of the towel is the area for your feet. Sit down there and brush off your feet before lying down fully on the towel.
  2. Rinse your feet or let them dry: wet sand sticks, dry sand trickles off. Standing in the sun for a few minutes after swimming means you take much less sand onto the towel. A water bottle for rinsing your feet also helps.
  3. A second towel for drying off: if you dry yourself with the lying towel, it gets wet – and wet fabric attracts sand. A separate towel for drying keeps the lying towel dry.
  4. Powder for the skin: a popular trick is baby powder or cornflour. Sprinkle a little on sandy, dry skin and the sand can be brushed off easily. This is especially handy for feet and legs.

When packing up

  1. Let it dry first, then shake it out: a wet towel doesn't release sand well. Let it lie or hang in the sun for a short while. Flat cotton towels are quick enough for this: in our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun.
  2. Shake it out in pairs: two people each hold two corners, stand across the wind and flap the towel up and down firmly several times. Then fold it inwards so the clean side is inside.

Getting your beach towel home without sand

The way home also determines how much sand ends up in the car and the flat:

  • Pack separately: sandy towels and clothes in their own bag, not between snacks and phone.
  • Shake out again outside: on the balcony or in front of the house, not in the bathroom.
  • Not into the machine with lots of sand: larger amounts of sand can collect in the drum and pump. Shake or beat it out thoroughly first, then wash.
  • Wash correctly: for our cotton towels, 30 °C, no fabric softener, air dry. More in the article on washing a hammam towel.

The beach bag itself also collects sand. Empty it completely at home and shake it out before putting it away. Beach bags such as the Canvas Flip-Flop beach bag can be found in the bags collection.

Which beach towel is most likely to stay sand-free?

Depending on how you spend your beach day, a different format suits you:

  • Alone or as a couple: a flat-woven towel measuring 180 × 100 cm such as the Ocean beach towel at approx. 400 g or the MAHINA beach towel.
  • With the family: one large towel instead of many small ones means fewer edges over which sand gets carried in. The Coastline XXL beach towel measures 240 × 200 cm and is made of 100 % cotton. Tips for large towels can be found in the article on the XXL beach towel for the family.
  • On the sun lounger: if you're not lying in the sand, you hardly have the problem. A towel with a pocket for the backrest stays on the lounger even in the wind.

A beach towel without sand with children: is it possible?

With children it's harder, because they dig, run and jump back and forth between water and towel all the time. Two things still help: give the children their own play towel or blanket directly on the sand and keep the large lying towel free as a calm, low-sand zone. And put a bottle or small bucket of water at the edge so feet can be rinsed briefly before stepping on. It will never be completely sand-free with children, but it will be much more pleasant.

What doesn't work

On the way to a beach towel without sand, a few popular tips don't help much:

  • Shaking the towel out wet: wet sand stays on the fabric. Let it dry first.
  • Brushing hard: with terry you tend to push the sand deeper into the loops.
  • Simply turning the towel over in the wind: then the sandy underside ends up on top.

Conclusion

A beach towel completely without sand doesn't exist, but one with little sand is easy to achieve. The most important thing is the fabric: flat-woven towels release sand much better than terry with its loops. Add a few simple habits – a dry spot, laying it out with the wind, weighing down the corners, a foot zone, a second towel for drying off and letting the towel dry before shaking it out. That way the sand stays where it belongs: on the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a beach towel without sand?

No towel stays completely sand-free. But flat-woven cotton towels and smooth microfibre are much easier to shake out than terry.

Why does sand stick to terry so much?

Terry consists of many small loops. Grains of sand slip in and get caught – especially when the towel is wet.

How do I shake out a beach towel properly?

Let it dry first, then hold it by the corners in pairs, stand across the wind and flap it up and down firmly several times. Then fold it with the clean side inwards.

Does baby powder help against sand?

On the skin, yes: powder absorbs moisture and the sand can be brushed off more easily. It doesn't belong on the towel.

Can I put a sandy beach towel in the washing machine?

Shake or beat it out thoroughly first. Larger amounts of sand shouldn't go into the machine, as they can collect in the drum and pump.
