XXL beach towel for the family: sizes, weight and practical tips
Share
An XXL beach towel is the answer to a familiar problem: four separate towels slide apart, sand ends up in the gaps and everyone looks for their own towel. One large towel for everyone creates a shared space – at the beach, at the lake, at a picnic. In this guide you'll find out which sizes exist, how many people they fit, what a large towel weighs, how to wash and dry it and who an XXL size is really worth it for.

When is a beach towel XXL?
There's no fixed standard. This rough classification is common:
- Standard: around 180 × 100 cm – one person lies stretched out.
- XL: somewhat wider, about 180 × 130 cm – one person comfortably or one adult with a child.
- XXL: much larger, about 200 × 200 cm and more – room for two or a small family.
What matters is less the label than the area. A beach towel measuring 240 × 200 cm has 4.8 m² – almost three times as much as a standard towel with 1.8 m².
XXL beach towel in a size comparison
| Towel | Size | Area | Weight | Room for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean beach towel | 180 × 100 cm | 1.8 m² | approx. 400 g | 1 person |
| Anatolia XL beach towel | 180 × 130 cm | 2.3 m² | – | 1 person comfortably or 1 adult with a child |
| Coastline XXL beach towel | 240 × 200 cm | 4.8 m² | approx. 1.2 kg | 2 people comfortably or a family with children |
| for comparison: 3 × Ocean | each 180 × 100 cm | 5.4 m² | approx. 1.2 kg | 3 people, but with gaps |
The last row is interesting: an XXL beach towel weighs about as much as three standard towels – but offers one continuous surface without gaps for sand to trickle into.
Who is a large beach towel worth it for?
Families with young children
Young children rarely stay on their own towel. A large surface becomes a play island where everyone sits, eats and rests together. Instead of weighing down corner after corner, you weigh down just four corners once – and keep an overview.
Couples
Two of you on an XXL beach towel lie side by side without one of you ending up half in the sand. At the same time it's just one item instead of two when travelling. Especially with limited luggage that's handy when you share a suitcase and beach bag.
Picnics and lakes
On the lawn by the lake or at a picnic in the park, a large towel is both a mat and a tablecloth. According to the product description, the Coastline XXL is also suitable as a picnic blanket, camping blanket and garden blanket. On damp grass, a thin groundsheet underneath protects against moisture from below.
Who is it not for?
To be honest: if you're travelling alone and every gram counts, a standard towel is the better choice. And if everyone in the family needs their own towel for drying off, the large towel doesn't fully replace the small ones – it's above all a surface to lie on.
Our family towel: the Coastline XXL
The Coastline XXL beach towel (€49.90) measures 240 × 200 cm and is made of 100% cotton. It is handmade on the Aegean coast of Turkey and has handmade fringes. The flat weave means sand is easy to shake off. The towel comes in black and white, beige, grey and dark blue.
- Weight: approx. 1.2 kg – light for its area, but noticeably heavier than a single towel.
- Care: machine wash at 30 °C, air-drying recommended.
- Use: beach, lake, picnic, camping, garden, bedspread or sofa throw.
What to look for when buying a large towel
- Weave: A large terry towel quickly becomes very heavy and dries slowly. Flat-woven cotton stays lighter for the same area and releases sand better.
- Material: Microfibre is light and dries quickly but feels synthetic. Cotton feels more natural on the skin and gets softer with every wash.
- Read the dimensions carefully: Is the size given with or without fringes? With large towels that can quickly make a few centimetres' difference.
- Colour: Dark towels heat up more in the blazing sun than light ones. Light shades, on the other hand, show sun cream stains more quickly.
- Care label: Does the towel fit in your washing machine, and do you have room to dry it? With 4.8 m² of fabric, it's worth asking before you buy.
In practice: how to use the large towel at the beach
- Choose your spot: At 2.40 m long the towel needs some room. Don't lay it right next to the path, or others will walk over it.
- Spread it out together: Two people each hold two corners, lift the towel and let it sink flat onto the sand.
- Weigh down the corners: Bags, shoes, cool bag or sand toys on the four corners.
- Create zones: One side for lying down, the other for bags, snacks and toys.
- Separate drying towels: Bring a light towel per person for drying off so the lying surface stays dry.
- Shake out the sand: At the end, hold the corners together and shake hard – downwind, not towards your neighbours.
Washing and drying an XXL beach towel
With a large towel it's worth thinking about the washing machine: dry, the Coastline weighs approx. 1.2 kg, which fits in any normal household machine. Wash it at 30 °C without fabric softener and spin it well so it holds less water.
To dry, a towel measuring 240 × 200 cm needs space. A washing line outdoors is ideal. On a clothes horse, fold it in the middle over several bars and turn it after a while so the inner layers dry too. Flat-woven cotton dries much faster than a terry towel of a comparable size.
Packing and carrying
Rolled up, the large towel fits in a roomy beach bag. Our beach bags measure approx. 50 × 40 × 15 cm. With the XXL beach towel inside, there's still room for water and snacks; it's best to pack the small drying towels separately. Fold the towel once lengthwise before rolling it, so the roll is shorter and fits better.
You'll find all towels in our beach towels collection.

Conclusion
An XXL beach towel replaces several individual towels as a lying surface, keeps a family or couple together on one surface and doesn't let sand trickle into gaps. It weighs about as much as three standard towels, needs a bit more space to dry and doesn't replace drying towels. If you go to the beach with children or as a couple, you gain one large shared island – which at home doubles as a picnic blanket or bedspread.
