The checklist: what goes in the beach bag?
Tick off the items the evening before when packing your beach bag. Anything you don't need stays at home – every item less makes the bag lighter.
Towels and clothing
- 1 beach towel per person to lie on
- 1 smaller towel for drying off or for your hair
- optional: a large towel for the whole family
- Swimwear (possibly already worn underneath)
- A change of clothes or a bathing poncho for changing
- Water shoes or flip-flops against hot sand
Sun protection
- Sun cream and lip balm with SPF
- Sunglasses, a hat
- optional: parasol or beach tent
Food and drink
- Plenty of water, ideally in an insulated bottle
- Snacks that can handle the heat: fruit, nuts, vegetable sticks, sandwiches
- Cool bag with an ice pack for longer days
Valuables and organisation
- Phone, keys, some cash or a card – in a small bag with a zip
- Bag for wet things
- Rubbish bag
Hygiene and first aid
- Plasters, disinfectant wipes, insect repellent
- Wet wipes, tissues
- Hairbrush and hair tie
Pastimes
- Book or e-reader, headphones
- Card game, ball, frisbee
Packing a beach bag with kids: the extras
With kids the list gets longer. Add these things:
- Swimming aid suited to age and swimming ability
- Sun hat with neck protection, UV shirt
- Sand toys (bucket, spade, moulds) in a separate mesh bag
- A complete change of clothes, including underwear
- Extra snacks and a separate water bottle for each child
Our tip: let older kids carry a small backpack with their own things. That leaves room in your bag for towels, water and first aid. For the whole family, one large towel instead of four small ones saves weight – the Coastline XXL beach towel measuring 240 × 200 cm weighs approx. 1.2 kg.
Packing a beach bag depending on where you're going
The basics stay the same, but the focus shifts depending on the beach. If you're packing your beach bag for a lake, you often need less: the distances are short, there's shade under the trees and a lawn is softer than sand. One towel per person, water, snacks and sun protection are usually enough.
On the Baltic and North Sea, wind comes into play. Pack a light jacket or a poncho and something to weigh down the corners of your towel. Because it quickly gets cool by the water, a second towel as a shoulder wrap makes sense.
On the Mediterranean the heat is the main issue: more water, more shade, water shoes against hot sand and stones. If you have to pack your beach bag every day on holiday, it's best to put together a fixed basic kit that you shake out in the evening and simply top up in the morning.
The right packing order
If you think in layers when packing your beach bag, you'll find everything faster and protect delicate items. Here's how:
| Layer | Contents | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Bottom | Water bottle, cool bag, snacks | Heavy items at the bottom, the bag stands steady |
| 2. Sides | Rolled-up beach towels | They cushion and keep everything upright |
| 3. Middle | Change of clothes, poncho, bag for wet things | Soft, needed later |
| 4. Top | Sun cream (in a bag), sunglasses, hat | Needed straight away and often |
| 5. Separate | Phone, keys, money in a small bag with a zip | Safe and quickly to hand |
Four packing tricks that make the day easier
- Roll towels instead of folding them: Rolled up they fit down the sides of the bag and don't crease.
- Sun cream in a bag: Then nothing leaks onto towels and clothes.
- Keep wet things separate: Take a separate bag for swimwear and damp towels for the way home.
- Pack your beach bag the evening before: In the morning just add water and snacks – done.
Saving space: the towels make the difference
Terry towels are the biggest space-eaters in any beach bag. Flat-woven cotton towels need only a fraction of that space and let go of sand more easily. The Ocean beach towel measures 180 × 100 cm and weighs approx. 400 g; according to the product description, the MAHINA beach towel offers the same lying surface and folds so small that there's still room next to it for sun cream, a water bottle and a book.
Another advantage on the way home: a thin towel is usually already dry again by the end of the day – you don't carry a heavy, wet terry towel home.
Heat: keeping water and snacks cool
In the blazing sun, everything in your bag quickly gets warm. These tips help:
- Insulated bottle: A double-walled stainless steel bottle keeps drinks cold much longer than a plastic bottle. According to the manufacturer, our IZY x Pip Studio thermos bottle "La Dolce Vita" keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours and stays dry on the outside – no condensation on towels and phone.
- Bag in the shade: Put it under the parasol or in the beach tent and lay a towel over it.
- Ice pack: In the cool bag between fruit and drinks.
- Sun cream: Don't leave it lying in the blazing sun, keep it in the shade or deep in the bag.
After the beach day: empty the bag straight away
Once you're home, empty the bag immediately: hang up wet towels and swimwear, shake out the sand, throw away rubbish, rinse the bottle. That way nothing smells musty and the bag is quickly ready again the next morning. Note empty sun cream or missing plasters straight on the checklist.
Which beach bag is the right one?
To pack your beach bag without squashing things, it needs above all space and a sturdy base. Our two models each measure approx. 50 × 40 × 15 cm and, according to the product description, have room for, for example, two hammam towels, a water bottle and a change of clothes:
- Flip-Flop beach bag: sand-coloured canvas with a brown flip-flop print, woven base, cord handles with wooden beads, light lining.
- Marina beach bag: blue and white stripes, jute-look base, cord handles with wooden beads and a tassel.
To be honest: both are open at the top and have no zip. That makes packing and unpacking quick – so for valuables, add a small bag with a zip. Simply shake out the sand and wipe off marks with a damp cloth.
You'll find all bags in our bags collection.

Conclusion
Well packed is half relaxed: beach towel, sun protection, water, a change of clothes, a bag for wet things and a small bag for valuables – those are the basics. If you put heavy items at the bottom when packing your beach bag and use light, flat-woven towels, you'll carry less and find everything faster. With kids, a few extras are added, which older children are happy to carry themselves.
Frequently asked questions
What must not be missing when packing a beach bag?
Beach towel, sun protection, enough water, a change of clothes and a bag for wet things. Plus phone and keys in a small bag with a zip.
How many towels do I need at the beach?
One per person to lie on. If you go into the water often, take a second one for drying off. Families save space with one large towel for everyone.
How do I protect my phone and keys?
In a small bag with a zip, tucked deep in the beach bag or kept on your body. A waterproof case also protects against splashes and sand.
How does the water stay cool at the beach?
With a double-walled, insulated bottle that you fill with cold water in the morning. Put the bag in the shade and lay a towel over it.
How do I get the sand out of the bag?
At home, turn it upside down and shake it out thoroughly. With flat-woven towels, much less sand comes home with you.
