Microfibre or cotton sauna towel? The honest comparison

A microfibre sauna towel sounds tempting: super light, folds up small, dry in minutes. Such towels have their place for sport and travel. In the sauna, however, we still recommend cotton – not on principle, but because you lie naked on the towel for a long time and sweat a lot. In this guide we compare both materials honestly: feel on the skin, absorbency, odour, care, weight and the environment. And we show that light also works with cotton.

We have been running the Meri Sauna at Lake Kulkwitz for more than 18 years. Our own sauna towels and hammam towels are all made of cotton – you should know that as you read.

What is microfibre?

Microfibre consists of very fine synthetic fibres, usually polyester, often blended with polyamide. The fibres are much finer than a human hair. This creates a large surface area that absorbs water quickly and releases it just as quickly. The result: a towel that absorbs a lot of water relative to its weight, is very light and dries quickly.

Cotton, by contrast, is a natural fibre from the seed boll of the cotton plant. It absorbs moisture into the fibre itself, feels soft and familiar on the skin and copes with regular washing. Depending on the weave, it becomes a dense sauna towel or a flat, light hammam towel.

Why we recommend cotton in the sauna

How it feels in the heat

In the sauna you lie naked, sweaty and for a long time on the towel. Many people find cotton more pleasant because it feels familiar and natural. On damp skin, microfibre feels smooth, slightly "squeaky" or clingy to some. That's subjective – but it's especially noticeable in the sauna, where you want to relax.

Sweat and odour

A sauna towel absorbs a lot of sweat. With synthetic fibres, many users report that odours set in more strongly over time and come back even after washing as soon as the towel gets damp. Cotton usually washes out well, provided it dries completely after your sauna day.

Absorbency when it counts

Microfibre absorbs water quickly – ideal for a quick dry after swimming. As a base over several sauna sessions, however, it also matters that sweat doesn't soak through to the wood. A large cotton towel, especially a dense one, has more reserves here.

Light works with cotton too

The biggest advantage of microfibre is its low weight. But flat-woven cotton hammam towels are also light and compact:

That way you lie on a full-size cotton towel in the sauna without your bag getting heavy. Rolled up, a hammam towel even fits into a small backpack. If you use the sauna at home or come by car, you can happily go for the dense DOTWAVE Sauna Towel XL.

When a microfibre sauna towel still makes sense

To be fair: there are situations where microfibre is the better choice.

  • Trekking and wild camping: when every gram counts and the towel is only for drying off quickly.
  • Swimming pool and training: a quick dry, back into the bag – fast drying is the winner here.
  • As a second towel: for hair or hands after the shower, if your main towel is made of cotton.

For the cabin itself, where you lie for a long time, sweat and want to relax, we stick with cotton. That's our recommendation from everyday sauna use, not a rule.

Buying a microfibre sauna towel: what to look for

If you still decide on a microfibre sauna towel – for example as a light second towel for travelling – pay attention to these points:

  1. Length: a microfibre sauna towel also has to be as long as you are. Many sports towels are too short for this; look for at least 180 cm.
  2. Surface: there are smooth, suede-like and waffle surfaces. If possible, feel before you buy which one is pleasant on damp skin.
  3. Density: very thin microfibre towels dry in no time but are more likely to let sweat through in the sauna. A slightly denser towel is the better choice here.
  4. Care label: check the washing temperature and whether tumble drying is allowed. Microfibre generally doesn't tolerate fabric softener.
  5. Neat edges: well-finished edges fray less and survive more washes.

That way you'll get a microfibre sauna towel that at least performs well on the go – even if it remains a compromise in the cabin.

Microfibre and the environment

One point that rarely appears in product descriptions: synthetic textiles shed tiny fibre fragments when washed, which can reach the environment via waste water. This doesn't only apply to microfibre towels, but a sauna towel is washed particularly often. If you use microfibre, you can counteract this with special wash bags, full loads and low temperatures. Cotton is a natural fibre and doesn't have this problem – but its cultivation has its own environmental issues, which is why labels such as OEKO-TEX help when choosing. And one more practical point: with proper care, a good cotton towel will accompany you for many years. Once worn out, cotton towels can be reused as cleaning or garden cloths.

Conclusion

A microfibre sauna towel is light, compact and dries fast – a good choice for sport, the swimming pool and trekking. In the sauna, where you lie naked on the towel for a long time and sweat a lot, cotton wins with its natural feel, good washability and reserves of absorbency. And since flat-woven cotton hammam towels weigh only around 270 to 400 g, you don't have to switch to synthetic fibre for a light sauna towel.

Frequently asked questions

Is a microfibre sauna towel good for the sauna?

It works, but many people find microfibre less pleasant on damp skin, and odours can linger more. For the cabin we recommend cotton; for sport and travel, microfibre is practical.

Does cotton dry more slowly than microfibre?

Yes, a little. But in our experience at the Meri Sauna, a flat-woven hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and about an hour indoors.

Can microfibre withstand the heat of the sauna?

As a rule, yes. The question is less about heat resistance than about how it feels on the skin and how it handles sweat over several sessions.

How do I wash a microfibre towel?

According to the label, without fabric softener and ideally separately from lint-shedding laundry such as cotton towels, because microfibre strongly attracts lint.

What is the lightest cotton alternative?

A flat-woven hammam towel. The hammam towel SULTAN weighs only about 270 g at approx. 180 × 100 cm.
