Sauna towel colour: light, dark or patterned – what is really practical in the sauna

When choosing a sauna towel, most people look at size and material first. In everyday use, however, the sauna towel colour decides more than you might think: how quickly stains show, whether the towel still looks fresh after a year and whether you can spot it straight away in a full relaxation room. In this guide we compare light, dark and patterned towels and show you how to keep the colour looking good for a long time.

We have been running the Meri Sauna at Lake Kulkwitz for more than 18 years and see every day what sauna towels look like after many washes. For us, the right sauna towel colour is therefore not just a matter of taste but a practical decision.

Light, dark or patterned: sauna towel colours compared

Each colour direction has its strengths and weaknesses. The table sums up the most important points for everyday sauna use:

CriterionLight (white, cream, beige)Dark (black, anthracite, navy)Patterned / multicoloured
Stainsshow quickly, especially deodorant, make-up, yellow marksforgiving, but light residues (salt, deodorant) can showsmall stains hardly show
Fadinghardly visible, more a greyingclearly visible with lots of sun or the wrong detergentless noticeable than with plain dark colours
Colour bleedingnot an issue, but picks up colour from other laundrypossible in the first washespossible depending on the shade
Recognitiondifficult, many towels look the samemediumeasy, especially with a striking pattern
Effectfresh, classic, "hotel look"calm, elegantlively, personal

Sauna towels in light colours

White, cream and beige look clean and classic. In everyday sauna use, however, they have one drawback: deodorant residue, self-tanner or make-up show immediately, and yellowish marks can develop over time. Light towels are therefore good for anyone who washes their towel after every visit and likes a calm look. By the way, a white towel isn't more hygienic than a colourful one – you just see sooner when it needs washing.

Sauna towels in dark colours

Black, anthracite or navy forgive small stains. In return, you can see when they fade: frequent drying in strong sun and detergents containing bleach make dark colours look lighter and patchy over time. In addition, strongly dyed dark towels can release some dye in the first few washes.

Patterned and multicoloured sauna towels

Stripes, diamonds, checks or graphic patterns are often the most practical choice for the sauna. Small stains disappear in the pattern, slight fading is less noticeable and you recognise your towel immediately. The DOTWAVE Sauna Towel XL, for example, comes in the patterns Confetti Pop, Rosé Grid, Mint Grid, Rainbow Lines and Black&White. The hammam towel MAHINA combines stripes with a geometric diamond pattern in red-grey, sage-grey or pink-grey.

Why sauna towels fade – and how to keep the colour

It's normal for a sauna towel to lose some colour over the years. How quickly that happens, however, is largely up to you. The most common causes:

  • Sun: UV light bleaches colours. A towel that lies or dries in strong sun for hours every summer day fades faster.
  • Detergent: heavy-duty detergents usually contain bleaching agents. For coloured towels, a colour detergent is the better choice.
  • Washed too hot: temperatures higher than on the label release more dye from the fibre.
  • Chlorine and salt: after the swimming pool or the sea, rinse or wash the towel soon.
  • Friction: very full drums and high spin speeds strain fibre and colour.

How to keep the colour looking good for longer

  1. Wash new, strongly dyed towels separately or with similar colours the first few times.
  2. Use colour detergent without bleach and skip the fabric softener.
  3. Stick to the temperature on the label – for our hammam towels and the DOTWAVE, that's 30 °C.
  4. Put it in the sun briefly to dry, but hang it in the shade for longer periods.
  5. Dry coloured towels inside out if they hang outside for a long time.

Sauna towel colour and stains: which colour forgives what

The typical stains on sauna towels come from deodorant, body oil, body lotion, make-up and self-tanner. You see them first on light towels; on dark ones, light residues such as salt marks tend to show. Patterned towels are the least sensitive here. The best prevention is the same regardless of colour: shower thoroughly before the sauna, without deodorant, perfume or cream. How to remove stains if they do appear is explained in a separate guide.

Special case: self-tanner and freshly dyed hair

Two things leave marks on almost any towel: self-tanner and freshly dyed hair. In the heat and with sweat, dyes dissolve more easily and soak into the fabric. On light towels this leads to brownish or coloured patches that often can't be removed completely. If you have recently applied self-tanner or dyed your hair, take a dark or patterned towel – or wait a few days before your sauna visit.

Which sauna towel colour suits you?

Rather than going by taste alone, it's worth choosing the sauna towel colour based on how you use the sauna:

  • Regularly at the thermal spa: a patterned towel or a strong colour. You can find it quickly among many others, and small stains won't show between two washes.
  • In your own sauna: there's no risk of mix-ups, and you wash straight after your session. A light towel is therefore perfectly fine at home.
  • For sauna and beach: mid-tones and patterns. They forgive sunscreen and sand, and sun fading is less noticeable than with black or navy.
  • For couples and families: each person gets their own sauna towel colour. That saves discussions in the relaxation room and when sorting laundry.
  • For lovers of order: a calm base colour in which you can buy several towels looks uniform in the cupboard.

Colour as a recognition mark

In the relaxation room there are often dozens of towels – many of them white or grey. A striking sauna towel colour or an eye-catching pattern is therefore the easiest way to avoid mix-ups. In families and couples, the rule "one colour per person" helps. You'll find more tips for finding your towel in our article on the topic.

Conclusion

There's no perfect sauna towel colour – but there is the right one for your everyday life. Light towels look fresh but show every stain. Dark ones are forgiving with stains but can fade and bleed at first. Patterned and multicoloured towels combine the advantages: stains hardly show and you find your towel straight away. With colour detergent, the right temperature and shade instead of constant sun, every colour stays beautiful for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Which colour is most practical for a sauna towel?

Patterned or multicoloured towels. Small stains hardly show, slight fading is less visible and you can spot your towel quickly in the relaxation room.

Does a new sauna towel bleed colour?

Strong and dark colours can release some dye in the first few washes. So wash new towels separately or with similar colours at first.

Why is my dark sauna towel fading?

Usually because of lots of sun while drying, heavy-duty detergent containing bleach or washing too hot. Colour detergent, the label temperature and drying in the shade help.

Is a white sauna towel more hygienic?

No. You just see dirt sooner on white towels. A hygienic towel is one that is washed regularly and dried completely – regardless of colour.

Which colour looks calmest in the sauna?

Natural tones such as beige, grey, sage or muted blue blend calmly with wood and stone. If you like it livelier, go for patterns – it's a matter of taste.
