Hammam towel weight: what 120 to 470 grams and GSM really mean
Share
How heavy is a hammam towel – and what does hammam towel weight actually tell you about quality, feel and use? In shops you often only find a gram figure without context, sometimes none at all. Our towels weigh between about 120 and 470 grams, depending on size and weave density. In this guide we explain the difference between total weight and fabric weight (GSM), calculate the GSM of our models and show which weight suits sauna, travel and everyday life.

Total weight and GSM: the difference
For towels there are two figures that are often confused:
- Total weight: What the whole towel weighs on the scales, for example approx. 400 g. This figure matters for luggage and bags.
- GSM (g/m²): The weight per square metre of fabric. It shows how dense and substantial the fabric is – regardless of size.
A large, light towel can therefore weigh more than a small, dense one. To compare towels fairly, it's worth looking at the GSM. It is often stated for terry towels, but rarely for hammam towels.
Hammam towel weight and GSM of our models
The total weights come from our product descriptions. We have roughly calculated the GSM from them (weight divided by area). Fringes are included in the weight but not in the area – so the values are guide figures for comparison, not manufacturer specifications.
| Model | Size | Weight | GSM (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SULTAN | approx. 180 × 100 cm | approx. 270 g | approx. 150 g/m² |
| Towel To Go | approx. 180 × 100 cm | approx. 270 g | approx. 150 g/m² |
| ADRIA | 180 × 100 cm | approx. 290 g | approx. 160 g/m² |
| Ocean | approx. 180 × 100 cm | approx. 400 g | approx. 220 g/m² |
| MAHINA | 180 × 100 cm without fringes | approx. 440 g | approx. 245 g/m² |
| Colombia | 180 × 95 cm | approx. 450 g | approx. 265 g/m² |
| Manolia | approx. 180 × 100 cm | approx. 470 g | approx. 260 g/m² |
| Ocean StayOn | 200 × 70 cm | approx. 400 g | approx. 285 g/m² (incl. pocket) |
| Mini Diamant | approx. 90 × 45 cm | approx. 120 g | approx. 295 g/m² |
| Coastline XXL | 240 × 200 cm | approx. 1.2 kg | approx. 250 g/m² |
Interesting: the Mini Diamant is the lightest towel, but it has one of the highest GSM values – it is small but densely woven. With the StayOn, the sewn-in pocket increases the value. And the Coastline XXL is the heaviest towel at around 1.2 kg, but sits in the middle range for GSM because it has so much surface.
Why hammam towels are so light
A terry towel consists of many loops that add volume and weight. A hammam towel is flat-woven, without loops. It therefore needs less yarn for the same area. How heavy a hammam towel ends up depends mainly on yarn thickness and weave density. For reference, the ADRIA description says: at around 290 g it weighs about as much as a terry guest towel – with an area of 180 × 100 cm.
What hammam towel weight means in everyday life
Light: up to approx. 300 g
SULTAN, Towel To Go and ADRIA are thin, drape softly and take up hardly any space in a bag. Ideal for travel, hand luggage, as a sarong or scarf. They feel airier and tend to dry fastest.
Medium: around 400 g
Ocean and StayOn sit in the middle. They feel a little more substantial and are a good compromise as a cover on the sauna bench or lounger and for drying off.
Substantial: from approx. 440 g
MAHINA, Colombia and Manolia are the heaviest 180 cm towels in our range. They feel more substantial, absorb a little more when drying off and wrap around the body more fully.
Weight, absorbency and drying time
More material can absorb more water – but then also takes longer to dry again. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel spread out dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and in about 60 minutes indoors. Light models are usually a little faster, heavier ones a little slower.
| Property | Light (up to 300 g) | Medium (around 400 g) | Substantial (from 440 g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pack size | smallest | small | a little larger |
| Feel | airy, flowing | balanced | substantial, full |
| Drying | fastest | fast | a little longer |
| Ideal for | travel, sarong, scarf | sauna, lounger, everyday | wrapping up, bathroom, cooler days |
Is heavier better? An honest look
Not automatically. A higher weight usually means denser fabric and a more substantial feel, but not necessarily higher quality. A light, cleanly woven towel with even edges and well-knotted fringes can be better made than a heavy, loosely woven one. So also pay attention to material, workmanship and care instructions. For travel, a low hammam towel weight is a clear advantage; for the sauna bench it can be a little more substantial.
Example calculation: hammam towel weight in your luggage
Two people, one week of beach holiday, two towels each: with four SULTAN towels (approx. 270 g each) that's around 1.1 kg. With four Manolia towels (approx. 470 g each) it's around 1.9 kg. The difference of about 800 g can be noticeable on flights with a baggage limit or when hiking. If you drive to the lake, on the other hand, you can choose the more substantial towel without thinking about the weight.
Putting hammam towel weight into context when buying
- Read the size too: A gram figure without dimensions says little. Divide the weight by the area, then you can compare towels.
- Consider the fringes: Long, dense fringes add weight but no area.
- Use first: Think about whether you will mainly carry the towel (light) or mainly lie on it and wrap yourself in it (more substantial).
- Check the material: A similar weight can feel completely different in cotton, linen or a blend.
Which weight suits you?
- Hand luggage and travel: SULTAN, Towel To Go or ADRIA.
- Sauna and lounger: Ocean or StayOn.
- Wrapping up and bathroom: MAHINA, Colombia or Manolia.
- Face, hands, gym: Mini hammam towel Diamant.
- Picnic and family: Coastline XXL – heavy, but with lots of surface.

Conclusion
The weight of our hammam towels ranges from about 120 g (Mini) to 470 g (Manolia); the Coastline XXL comes to around 1.2 kg. GSM is more meaningful for comparison: our large towels range roughly between 150 and 265 g/m². Light towels are ideal for on the go, medium ones for the sauna, substantial ones for wrapping up. Heavier doesn't automatically mean better. You'll find all models with their weights in our hammam towels collection.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a hammam towel weigh?
A 180 × 100 cm hammam towel weighs about 270 to 470 g with us, depending on the model. The mini format at 90 × 45 cm weighs around 120 g.
What is a good GSM for a hammam towel?
There is no fixed rule. Light towels around 150 g/m² are ideal for travel; values around 220 to 265 g/m² feel more substantial. Material and workmanship also matter.
Is a heavier hammam towel better?
Not automatically. It feels more substantial and absorbs a little more, but is heavier in your luggage and dries a little more slowly.
Why is a hammam towel lighter than terry?
Because it is flat-woven and has no loops. That means less yarn in the same area.
Does a hammam towel get heavier through washing?
The weight hardly changes. Cotton usually becomes softer with the first few washes, though; towels that aren't pre-shrunk can shrink a little in the first wash.
