Partner massage at home: preparation, strokes and routine

A partner massage is a lovely way to end the evening together. You don't need a spa appointment or any training. Much more important than perfect technique are a warm room, a comfortable surface, calm hands and an open word about what feels good. In this guide you will learn how to prepare everything, which simple strokes are suitable for beginners, what a relaxed routine looks like and why two large hammam towels are so practical for it.

What to prepare for a partner massage
Good preparation means nobody has to get up halfway through to fetch something. Put everything within reach before you start:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Warm room | Lying still, you cool down quickly. Turn the heating up a little more than usual beforehand. |
| Firm surface | A soft bed gives way. A mat on the floor or a firm mattress is more comfortable for both. |
| Hammam towel as an underlay | Protects bed, sofa or mat from oil |
| Second hammam towel as a cover | Covers whatever isn't being massaged and keeps you warm |
| Massage oil or lotion | So that the hands glide without pulling on the skin |
| Small cushion or rolled-up towel | Under the ankles or the stomach so that the back lies relaxed |
| Bathrobe and water | For afterwards |
Add dimmed lights, phones in flight mode and – if you like – quiet music without vocals. That's all you need for the right atmosphere.
Why hammam towels are so well suited to massage
- Large enough: a MAHINA hammam towel measuring 180 × 100 cm fully covers a mat or the lying surface. If you want more area, take the Anatolia XL hammam towel at 130 × 180 cm.
- Light: as a cover, a flat-woven towel doesn't feel heavy. You can easily fold it back while massaging and lay it down again.
- Washable: the MAHINA towels are washed at 30 °C without fabric softener or bleach and air-dried. Massage oil can leave marks – so wash the towel promptly after the massage and follow the care label.
- Quick-drying: in our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and about 60 minutes indoors.
You will find more models in different sizes and colours in our hammam towels collection.
The right oil
For a partner massage on the back, a neutral massage oil or a rich lotion works well. What matters is that you both like the scent and that the skin tolerates the product. With a new oil, you can try it on a small patch first, for example the inside of the elbow.
- Warm it up: never put the oil directly on the back – put it in your hands first and rub them together.
- Start sparingly: better to add more twice than too much at once. Otherwise it slides more than it relaxes.
- For short hand massages: a good hand cream is enough here. How it works is explained in the article Hand massage with hand cream.
Simple strokes for beginners
You don't need to know any technical terms. Four basic movements are enough for a relaxing partner massage:
Stroking
With flat hands, stroke slowly from the lower back up alongside the spine to the shoulders, and back down on the outside. This is how you begin and end the massage – and spread the oil at the same time.
Kneading
On the shoulders and the sides of the back, gently grasp the muscles with your whole hands and let go again, like dough. No pinching, no plucking.
Circling
Draw small circles with your thumbs or fingertips, for example between the shoulder blades. The pressure comes from your body weight, not from the strength of your fingers.
Smoothing out
Towards the end, the movements become slower and lighter. Finally, your hands rest quietly on the back for a moment before you lift them off.
A simple twenty-minute routine
- Lie down: face down on the hammam towel, cushion under the ankles, covered with the second towel.
- Settle in: place your hands calmly on the back and wait for a few breaths.
- Back: fold the cover back to the hips, warm the oil, start with long strokes.
- Shoulders and neck: kneading and circling, always beside the spine, never directly on it.
- Arms: if you like, finish by stroking down the arms to the hands.
- Finish: cover the back again and let your partner lie for a few more minutes.
- Afterwards: slip into the bathrobe, drink a glass of water – and then swap.
For afterwards, a soft, light robe such as the Trimita Zebra hooded bathrobe made of three-layer muslin is ideal. The hood keeps the head warm while the body is still resting.
Talking is allowed: adjusting the pressure
Everyone perceives pressure differently. What one person describes as pleasantly firm is already too much for another. So ask once or twice at the beginning: "Is this good, firmer or gentler?" The person being massaged speaks up immediately if something is unpleasant. After that, it can happily go quiet.
Also pay attention to your own posture. Massaging while kneeling or bent over quickly gives you a tense back yourself. Position yourself so that you can lean forward with your body weight instead of pushing with your arms.
After the partner massage
The moment after the massage is part of it too. Jumping up straight away means losing the calm. A few habits help round off the evening:
- Stay lying down: two or three minutes under the towel to let it sink in before moving on.
- Remove the oil: if you don't like the oily feeling on your skin, take a quick lukewarm shower. A mild shower gel such as the VEGAN FOX shower gel (200 ml) is all you need.
- Deal with the towels right away: don't put the towel with oil marks in the laundry basket with the others; wash it separately and promptly.
- Swap: whoever massaged before now gets their turn – on another evening if it has got late.
The partner massage as a regular ritual
Many couples find that a partner massage is nicest when it doesn't only happen on special occasions. One fixed evening a month or every Sunday is enough. Keep the towels in their own place so everything is ready in two minutes. If you want to give a partner massage as a gift, write a small voucher – that is often nicer than a bought present.
When you should skip it
A partner massage is relaxation, not treatment. If there is pain, injury, fever, skin irritation, varicose veins, pregnancy or any other health question, check with a doctor beforehand whether a massage is appropriate – or leave it to professionals.

Conclusion
For a relaxed partner massage at home you mainly need warmth, calm, a good oil and two large towels: one as an underlay, one as a cover. With four simple strokes and a calm routine, it becomes an evening that is all about the two of you.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a partner massage last?
For the back, 15 to 20 minutes per person is a good guide. Better shorter and calm than long and strained.
Can I use hand cream for a short hand massage?
Yes. The Nourishing hand cream with shea butter and macadamia (120 ml) works well for the hands. For the back, an oil or lotion is more practical.
Which hammam towel is suitable as an underlay?
Any large hammam towel measuring 180 × 100 cm. If you want a wider underlay, take the Anatolia XL hammam towel at 130 × 180 cm.
Does massage oil wash out of a hammam towel?
Wash the towel promptly after the massage according to the care label. Oil can still leave marks, which is why a towel kept just for massages is worthwhile.
Bed or floor – where is it better to massage?
On a mat on the floor the surface is firmer and you can support yourself better. A firm bed also works; a soft one gives way too much.
