Fußbad-Ritual: VEGAN FOX Fußcreme mit Aloe Vera

Foot bath ritual: a guide to a small time-out at home

A warm foot bath is one of the simplest rituals you can treat yourself to at home. You do not need a bathtub, a spa or much equipment – just a bowl, warm water and about twenty minutes. With a scrub, thorough drying and a foot cream at the end, it becomes a small evening for yourself. Here you will learn which temperature is pleasant, how long the bath should last, what can go into the water and when you should be careful.

What you need for the foot bath

What What to look for Our suggestion
Bowl or foot tub Big enough for both feet, water should reach above the ankles Whatever you have at home – a large bowl or a bucket will do
Base Catches splashes, protects floor and carpet An Ocean hammam towel, folded several times
For drying Handy, thin enough for the spaces between the toes Diamant mini hammam towel, approx. 90 × 45 cm
Scrub (optional) For soles and heels, not on irritated skin VEGAN FOX peppermint body scrub
Care For feet and heels VEGAN FOX foot cream with aloe vera
Kettle For topping up when the water cools Always add hot water carefully and away from your feet

The Ocean hammam towel is made of 100 % cotton, flat-woven and measures 180 × 100 cm. Folded several times, it lies softly under the bowl; afterwards you hang it up unfolded to dry – in our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel is dry again in about 60 minutes indoors.

Temperature and duration: how to make the foot bath pleasant

For a relaxing foot bath, the water should be pleasantly warm, not hot. A common guideline is about 35 to 38 °C, roughly body temperature or slightly above. Test the temperature beforehand with your hand or elbow. If you want to know exactly, use a bath thermometer.

Ten to fifteen minutes are completely sufficient. Longer brings hardly any benefit, as the water cools down anyway and the skin softens unnecessarily. If it gets too cool, you can add some warm water – always at the edge of the bowl and not directly onto your feet.

And contrast foot baths?

Contrast foot baths with warm and cold water are known from the Kneipp tradition. They are a separate application and not suitable for everyone. If you want to try them, especially if you have vein or circulation problems, check with a doctor first.

What can go into the water

Clear water is completely sufficient. If you like, you can add:

  • Salt: A handful of table salt or sea salt is a common addition. However, salt can sting on cracked skin or small injuries.
  • A splash of shower gel: Adds a little foam and scent. The VEGAN FOX shower gel comes in linden blossom, grapefruit and red grape.
  • Herbs or flowers: Purely decorative – nice to look at, but only if you tolerate them well.

Be careful with essential oils: they do not mix with water and float undiluted on the surface. If you want to use them, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The foot bath ritual in six steps

  1. Prepare: Lay the hammam towel on the floor, place the bowl on it, fill in the water, check the temperature. Keep the scrub, mini towel and foot cream within reach.
  2. Soak: Put your feet in the water for ten to fifteen minutes. Lean back, read a book or simply do nothing.
  3. Scrub: Take your feet out of the water and apply the scrub to the damp, clean skin of your soles and heels. According to the directions, stir it briefly first, massage it in with slow, circular movements and then rinse thoroughly – for example with fresh water from a jug over the bowl.
  4. Dry: Thoroughly, especially between the toes. Damp spaces between the toes are a common mistake after a foot bath.
  5. Apply cream: Put a small amount of foot cream on your feet and heels and massage it in carefully.
  6. Rest: If you like, put on thin cotton socks and put your feet up for a few more minutes.

VEGAN FOX peppermint body scrub for the foot bath ritual

The scrub

The VEGAN FOX body scrubs (300 g each, €12.90) are based on salt, apricot kernel powder and nourishing oils with shea butter. The peppermint scrub smells clear and fresh, which makes it a good fit for the feet. If you prefer warm and spicy, choose the ginger scrub. Once or twice a week is enough. Important according to the manufacturer: do not use on irritated skin or directly after hair removal.

The foot cream

The VEGAN FOX foot cream (120 ml, €10.90) contains castor oil, aloe vera and chamomile, plus tea tree, lavender and peppermint oil for a fresh herbal scent. It is vegan, 99 % of natural origin and meant for daily use as needed.

When a foot bath is especially nice

  • After a long day on your feet: Standing at work, a shopping trip, a trade fair.
  • After a hike: When your feet have been in shoes for hours.
  • On cold evenings: When your feet just will not warm up.
  • As part of a wellness evening: For example combined with a hand massage with hand cream. If you would rather get into the water completely, you will find ideas in the article Bath ritual.

If you want to do something for your feet after the sauna, you will find a separate, shorter routine in the article Foot care after the sauna.

A foot bath on the go

Even in a hotel, a holiday flat or a camper van you do not have to do without the ritual. Often a shower tray with a plug, a large washbasin or a folding basin from a camping shop is enough. A mini hammam towel weighs about 120 g and fits into any bag – it serves as a base and a drying towel at the same time. Add a foot cream to your toiletry bag, and the evening after a long day out is saved. If you travel a lot, you can leave out the scrub and stick to soaking, drying and applying cream.

Hygiene: bowl and towels

After the foot bath, rinse the bowl with hot water and let it dry. If the whole family uses the same foot tub, it is best for everyone to have their own drying towel. You can wash the hammam towels at 30 °C without fabric softener and let them air-dry.

When you should be careful

A foot bath is a feel-good routine. In some cases, however, caution is advised:

  • with diabetes or circulatory disorders, because the sense of temperature in the feet may be reduced – always measure with a thermometer here,
  • with vein problems or swollen legs,
  • with open wounds, inflammation or athlete's foot.

In these cases, talk to your doctor first.

Conclusion

A foot bath needs very little: a bowl, pleasantly warm water at about 35 to 38 °C and ten to fifteen minutes. With a scrub for soles and heels, thorough drying between the toes and a foot cream at the end, it becomes a ritual that fits into any evening. A hammam towel as a base keeps the floor dry and is quickly ready for use again.
