Before packing for your wellness weekend: check what the hotel provides

The most important step happens before you open the suitcase. Spa hotels handle their amenities very differently: some put a bathrobe, sauna towel and spa slippers in the room, others hand out towels only for a fee or deposit, and some provide nothing at all. A look at the hotel website, your booking confirmation or a short email to reception saves you a lot of weight.

Ask specifically about these points:

  • Is there a bathrobe in the room, and in which sizes?
  • Are there sauna towels, and may they be used in every sauna area?
  • Are towels changed daily or only for a fee?
  • Are there spa slippers, or should you bring your own flip-flops?
  • Is the sauna area textile-free, and is there a women-only sauna?
  • Is there a dress code in the restaurant in the evening?
  • Do massages or treatments need to be booked in advance?

With these answers you know exactly which parts of the checklist below apply to you.

What hotels usually provide – and what they don't

The following table shows what is common in many hotels. It does not replace asking, but it helps you assess the situation.

ItemUsual in spa hotelsBringing your own is worth it if …
Bathrobeoften in the room, often one sizeyou want a particular length, a hood or a light fabric
Sauna toweloften available, sometimes for a feethe hotel provides no towels or they are too short
Lounger towel for the relaxation roomrarely extrayou don't want to put your damp sauna towel on the lounger
Spa slippersoften disposable slippersyou prefer non-slip, comfortable flip-flops
Shower gel and shampoousually in the bathroom and sauna showersyou like a particular scent or have sensitive skin
Face, hand and foot creamrarelyalways – care feels good after several sauna sessions
Water bottlewater or tea usually available in the spayou want to drink in your room or on a walk

The checklist: packing for a wellness weekend the right way

The list is sorted by area. Simply cross out whatever your hotel provides.

Textiles for sauna, pool and relaxation room

  • Bathrobe: if none is provided or the hotel robe is too short or too heavy for you.
  • Sauna towel: at least as long as you are, so no sweat gets on the wood when sitting or lying.
  • Second towel for drying off: after the shower or pool, so your sauna towel stays dry.
  • Lounger towel for the relaxation room: for example the Ocean StayOn hammam towel measuring 200 × 70 cm, whose sewn-in pocket slips over the backrest of the lounger so it doesn't slide off.
  • Swimwear: for pool and whirlpool, ideally two sets to change.
  • Flip-flops with a non-slip sole.

Care and bathroom

  • shower gel in your favourite scent
  • facial cleanser and face cream
  • hand cream and foot cream for the evening
  • optionally a body scrub for the shower before the first sauna session
  • hair ties, brush, deodorant, dental care
  • personal medication

If you don't want to collect every product individually, choose the Head-to-Toe Care Set by VEGAN FOX: three shower gels, cleansing foam for normal skin, facial peel, face cream, hand cream and foot cream – all vegan. The facial peel is better suited to a quiet evening, though, not to right before the sauna.

Clothing

When packing for a wellness weekend, many people underestimate how few clothes they really need.

  • comfortable clothes for the day in the hotel (joggers, a soft shirt)
  • an outfit for dinner if there is a dress code
  • warm socks for the relaxation room and your room
  • a weatherproof jacket and shoes for walks
  • sleepwear

Small things that are often forgotten

  • a book or e-reader for the relaxation room (phones are usually unwelcome there)
  • a water bottle, for example the IZY Van Gogh Flowers thermos bottle with 500 ml – according to the manufacturer it keeps drinks warm for up to 12 hours and cold for up to 24 hours
  • charging cable
  • a small bag for the way from your room to the spa
  • a bag for wet swimwear on the way home
  • booking confirmation and ID

Packing light: which bathrobe, which towels?

If you want to pack light for your wellness weekend, textiles are where you save the most. Thick terry robes and heavy sauna towels take up a lot of space. Light cotton qualities such as hammam or muslin, on the other hand, roll up tightly and dry faster – handy if you need your towel again in the afternoon.

ProductKey dataFor your luggage
Ocean hammam towel180 × 100 cm, approx. 400 g, flat-woven cottonlight, rolls up tightly – as a sauna towel or for drying off
Ocean StayOn hammam towel200 × 70 cm, approx. 400 g, with a pocket for the backreststays in place on the lounger
DOTWAVE sauna towel XL175 × 90 cm, approx. 900–950 gcosier, but takes up more space
Trimita Barok bathrobelight Turkish cotton, not terry, quick-dryinggood for a small suitcase
Trimita hooded bathrobe Elephantthree-layer muslin, hood, OEKO-TEXlight, with a hood for the walk through the sauna garden
DOTWAVE bathrobeapprox. 1.6–1.7 kg, hoodvery cosy, rather heavy for travelling

Our recommendation: if your hotel provides a bathrobe that fits you, leave yours at home and bring a light lounger towel instead. If you prefer to wear your own, choose a light robe and roll it instead of folding it. You can find more on choosing a travel robe in our article on the light bathrobe for travel and holidays.

How to fit everything into a small suitcase

With these steps you can pack compactly for a wellness weekend – even for two.

  1. Roll textiles instead of folding: hammam towels and light bathrobes become tight rolls and fit along the side of the suitcase.
  2. Toiletries in a bag: liquids belong in a tight toiletry bag so nothing leaks. Air travel has its own rules – see our guide to cosmetics in hand luggage.
  3. Pack the spa bag on top: swimwear, flip-flops and sauna towel go into a light bag on top. That way you are ready to go on arrival, even if your room isn't ready yet.
  4. Keep wet things separate: a separate bag for damp swimwear keeps everything else dry.
  5. Reduce clothing: in a spa hotel you mostly wear a bathrobe during the day anyway. One evening outfit and comfortable clothes are enough.

On arrival day: what belongs in your handbag

In many hotels you may use the spa before official check-in – ask when booking. So if you want to pack cleverly for your wellness weekend, keep everything for the first few hours within reach: swimwear, flip-flops, a towel, a water bottle and something to read. You can then leave your suitcase at reception and go straight to the sauna. The same applies on departure day: you can often stay after check-out – then a bag for the wet towel is worth its weight in gold.

Common mistakes when packing for a wellness weekend

  • Only one towel: after the first sauna session it is damp, and there is no dry one for the relaxation room. How many you really need is explained in the article “How Many Sauna Towels Do You Need?”.
  • Bathrobe too heavy: a thick robe fills half the suitcase and dries slowly.
  • Forgetting skin care: after several sauna sessions and swims, skin often feels dry. Hand and foot cream weigh very little.
  • No socks: warm feet are pleasant in the relaxation room and in your room.
  • Too many clothes: hardly anyone needs three outfits for two evenings.

Note: if you have health questions about using the sauna, clarify them with a doctor beforehand.

Conclusion

Packing for a wellness weekend is easy if you stick to the order: first ask the hotel what is provided, then add what's missing. Your suitcase should hold a light bathrobe (if needed), a sauna towel, a lounger towel for the relaxation room, swimwear, flip-flops and your skin care. Light cotton towels roll up tightly and save space. And everything for the first few hours goes into a bag on top – then relaxation starts the moment you arrive. You'll find our bathrobes in the bathrobes collection and lounger towels among our hammam towels.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own bathrobe for a wellness weekend?

Only if the hotel doesn't provide one or you want a particular cut, a hood or a lighter fabric. Ask reception in advance.

How many sauna towels do I need for two days?

If the hotel provides no towels, plan on one sauna towel per day plus one towel for drying off. A light hammam towel dries quickly in between.

May I use my own care products in the sauna?

In the shower, yes. In the sauna cabin itself, creams and oils are usually not welcome. Apply skin care after your last sauna session and after cooling down.

What do I wear in a spa hotel during the day?

In the spa area usually swimwear or a bathrobe, in your room comfortable clothes. Some hotels have a dress code for dinner – check beforehand.

Can I pack for a wellness weekend with hand luggage only?

Yes, if the hotel provides bathrobes and sauna towels. Then swimwear, flip-flops, a light lounger towel, toiletries and clothes are enough. Air travel has its own rules for liquids.

What should I definitely not forget?

Flip-flops, swimwear, a towel for the relaxation room and your favourite skin care. Many hotels don't provide these or only in a basic version.
