Hammam towel in the garden: garden shower, pool, lounger and hammock
Share
A hammam towel in the garden is the relaxed answer to a typical summer day at home: a quick shower under the garden shower, then into the paddling pool, then onto the lounger or into the hammock. Towels often hang outside all day, get wet several times and still shouldn’t go musty. Flat-woven cotton dries faster than terry, simply lets go of grass and leaves and doubles as a mat and sun protection. Here you will learn how to use hammam towels sensibly at the garden shower, pool, lounger and hammock, and how they stay nice outdoors for a long time.

What a towel in the garden needs to do
In the bathroom a towel hangs protected on the rail. In the garden things are different: sun, wind, dew in the evening and wet hands of children running back and forth between pool and lawn. A good garden towel should therefore:
- dry quickly, because it gets wet several times a day,
- let go of grass and leaves instead of trapping them in loops,
- stay on the lounger when a gust of wind comes,
- not go musty, even if it lies around for a few hours.
This is exactly where a hammam towel shows its strengths. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and in about 60 minutes indoors.
Hammam towel in the garden or terry: the comparison
| Criterion | Hammam towel | Terry towel |
|---|---|---|
| Drying between two cool-downs | usually dry in time | often damp until evening |
| Grass, leaves, sand from the sandpit | shake out, done | stays in the loops |
| Lying on the lawn | thin, airy | softer, but warmer |
| Cosiness on a cool evening | lower | higher |
| Look in the garden | stripes and fringes, almost decorative | more bathroom-like |
To be honest: for a cool evening on the terrace a fluffy bathrobe is cosier. For a hot afternoon with water, the hammam towel is the more practical choice.
At the garden shower
A hook or rail next to the garden shower, a hammam towel on it – done. Make sure the towel doesn’t hang directly in the splash zone. Because it is flat-woven, it dries quickly between two cool-downs and doesn’t hang around like a wet rag.
- Two hooks, two towels: One for drying off, one as a wrap for the walk to the lounger.
- A small towel for your hands: The Mini hammam towel Diamant measuring approx. 90 × 45 cm is ideal for hands and face when you only want to rinse your feet.
- Foot mat: An old, folded towel in front of the shower stops wet feet from picking up grass and soil.
At the paddling pool
At the pool it is all about drying off and lying down. A Hammam towel Ocean measuring 180 × 100 cm is enough for wrapping up and as a lying towel. If the whole family lies on the lawn, spread out the Beach towel Coastline XXL measuring 240 × 200 cm – one surface for everyone instead of four separate towels.
A tip from everyday life: if you rinse off briefly before using the pool, you bring less grass and sunscreen into the water – and the towel stays fresh for longer.
On the lounger
On garden loungers, a towel that is just laid on top tends to slide off, especially on smooth plastic or fabric covers. With the Hammam towel Ocean StayOn you pull the sewn-in pocket over the backrest – so it stays put, even when you get up or a gust of wind comes. At 200 × 70 cm it fits most loungers.
A hammam towel in the garden has another advantage on the lounger: fabric covers stay clean because sunscreen and sweat end up in the washable towel instead of the cushion.
For deckchairs without a backrest, such as classic wooden deckchairs with fabric, lay a large towel folded once lengthwise and fold the top end over the edge.
In the hammock
In a hammock, a hammam towel makes a pleasant layer: it protects against rough fabric or net meshes pressing into your skin and loosely covers you while you doze. Light models such as the Hammam towel SULTAN at approx. 270 g are ideal for this.
Important: a hammam towel is not a hammock. Never stretch it between trees and don’t put your weight on it – it is not made for that.
Hammam towel in the garden as a play and picnic blanket
Between swimming breaks, the lawn becomes a playground and picnic area. A large towel is quickly spread out, and crumbs, grass and leaves can simply be shaken out afterwards. For children commuting between paddling pool and sandpit, this is more practical than a thick wool blanket that soaks up moisture and takes a long time to dry.
- A mat in the shade: Spread it out under the tree or parasol – lying on the towel feels airier than on a blanket.
- Not on wet grass: In the morning after dew or after watering the lawn, remember a hammam towel is not waterproof. A thin tarp underneath helps.
- For the garden table: When the picnic moves to the table, you will find ideas in our article on using a hammam towel as a tablecloth.
How your hammam towel stays nice in the garden
- Bring it in at night: Dew makes towels damp again overnight.
- Not for hours in blazing sun: A short time is enough for drying. If you leave a towel hanging outside for days, strong colours may fade.
- Fixed colours per person: One towel per family member in their own colour saves arguments.
- Wash regularly: After a few days or when they smell of sunscreen and pool chlorine – at 30 °C, without fabric softener, air-dried.
- Not on the barbecue table: Grease and sauce splashes can usually be washed out, but a separate cloth for the table is better.

Conclusion
A hammam towel in the garden is more practical than terry on hot days: it dries between garden shower and pool, lets go of grass and leaves and looks almost decorative outdoors. On the lounger the StayOn with its pocket stays in place, in the hammock a light towel is a pleasant layer, and there is an XXL surface for the family. Bring it in at night and don’t leave it in the sun for days – then it stays nice for a long time.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hammam towel stay outside in the garden all day?
During the day, yes. In the evening you should bring it in because dew makes it damp again, and don’t leave it hanging in blazing sun for days.
Does the towel slip on the garden lounger?
A towel just laid on top can slip. The StayOn has a pocket for the backrest and therefore stays in place.
How often should I wash garden towels?
After a few days of use or as soon as they smell of chlorine or sunscreen. At 30 °C and without fabric softener.
Can I use a hammam towel as a hammock?
No. As a cover or blanket in the hammock, yes; as a load-bearing cloth between two trees, no.
What do I do with the hammam towel in the garden when it rains?
Bring it in and let it dry spread out indoors. In our experience this takes about 60 minutes indoors.
Which towel is suitable for the paddling pool with children?
One large towel for everyone, about 240 × 200 cm, plus a separate hammam towel per child for wrapping up.
