Why children's punch in a thermos bottle?

Hot drinks are available at almost every Christmas market. Still, bringing your own has a few advantages:

  • You decide how sweet it is. Many ready-made mixes are quite sweet. At home you can work with juice, tea and spices and add sugar or honey sparingly.
  • The temperature is right. A drink that is no longer boiling hot is more pleasant, especially for children. You can check it before pouring.
  • No queuing. With small children, every queue tests your patience. A sip from your own bottle is quicker.
  • Fewer disposable cups. If you bring your own cup and bottle, you don't need paper cups.

A double-walled stainless steel bottle is well suited for this. According to the manufacturer, both of our IZY bottles keep drinks warm for up to 12 hours and cold for up to 24 hours. For an afternoon out in the cold, that is usually more than enough.

Basic recipe: children's punch for a 500 ml bottle

The following recipe is deliberately simple and makes a little more than half a litre – so you can fill the bottle and still have some left to taste.

Ingredients

  • 300 ml water
  • 2 bags of fruit tea (e.g. rosehip or mixed berries)
  • 150 ml apple juice
  • 100 ml orange juice (freshly squeezed or not from concentrate)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 1–2 slices of organic orange
  • 1 tsp honey or sugar to taste

Preparation

  1. Brew the tea: bring the water to the boil, add the tea bags and let them steep for about 8 minutes. Then remove the bags.
  2. Add the spices: put the cinnamon, cloves, star anise and orange slices into the pot.
  3. Add the juice: pour in the apple and orange juice and heat everything gently for about 10 minutes. Don't let it boil vigorously – that keeps the flavour rounder.
  4. Season: only now sweeten to taste. Often the sweetness of the juices is enough.
  5. Strain: pour the drink through a fine sieve. Spices and orange slices don't go into the bottle.

Why strain? Whole spices keep infusing in the bottle for hours, and the taste quickly becomes bitter or very intense. Cloves and pieces of fruit are also hard to get out of a narrow bottle opening.

Variations for every taste

The basic recipe is easy to adapt. The table shows a few proven combinations:

VariationBaseSpices & extrasTaste
Classicfruit tea, apple and orange juicecinnamon, clove, orangefruity, Christmassy
Red berry punchberry tea, red grape juicecinnamon, vanillarich, slightly tart
Apple gingercloudy apple juice, watera few slices of fresh ginger, cinnamonfresh, slightly spicy
Mild for little onesrooibos, apple juice diluted half and halfcinnamon onlygentle, low acidity

Tip: if your child is sensitive to a lot of acidity, replace the orange juice with more apple juice or water. If you prefer it less sweet, use a higher proportion of tea.

How to fill the punch correctly

To keep the drink nice and warm even after a few hours, the order matters.

  1. Preheat the bottle: fill the empty bottle with hot water, close it and let it stand for a few minutes. Then pour it out. This way the inner wall doesn't absorb the heat of the drink first.
  2. Fill it hot: pour the strained mixture straight from the stove. Use a funnel or a small jug with a spout – hot liquid splashes easily.
  3. Not quite to the brim: leave a little space below the closure so nothing overflows when you screw the lid on.
  4. Close it tightly: screw the cap on firmly. Both IZY bottles have a leak-proof screw cap, so the bottle can go into your backpack.
  5. Pack cups: for children, a small cup is more practical than drinking straight from the bottle. The drink also cools down to drinking temperature faster in it.

Safety: hot is good, too hot is not

A well-insulated bottle keeps drinks hot for a long time – which is exactly what can become a problem with children. After two hours in a backpack, the contents are often much hotter than you would expect.

  • Always taste it yourself first. Pour a sip into the cup and test it before you hand it over.
  • Let it cool. In the cup it cools down quickly in the cold air. Waiting a minute or two is usually enough.
  • Don't let children pour on their own. Hot liquid can run over their fingers when opening and pouring.
  • Option for little ones: for very small children, dilute a portion with a little cold juice before pouring it into the cup.

Children's punch at the Christmas market: what applies on site

Whether you may bring your own drinks to a Christmas market is not regulated uniformly. Many markets take place in public spaces, where a thermos bottle bothers no one. Some organisers, however, have their own house rules, for example for fenced-off areas, entry with checks or huts with seating. If in doubt, check the market's website or ask on site.

Regardless of the rules, it's a question of fairness: at the vendors' stalls you drink their drinks, and you enjoy your own punch at the edge, on the way or on a bench. And of course you take your cup home again.

And what about mulled wine?

The same method naturally works with mulled wine for the adults. But: alcohol doesn't belong in children's hands, and anyone driving doesn't drink mulled wine. If you take both, use two clearly distinguishable bottles – for example our two IZY designs with different patterns. That way there can be no mix-up. A good rule of thumb: the children's punch goes into the bottle the child knows, the mulled wine stays with the adult.

An alcohol-free option is also a good choice for adults, especially if you still have to drive later or are spending a long day outdoors.

Cleaning after the punch

Fruit juice, sugar and spices leave residues and aromas behind. So rinse the bottle out the same evening if possible:

  1. Pour out the remaining punch and rinse the bottle with warm water.
  2. Fill it with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid and clean it with a bottle brush.
  3. Rinse the closure thoroughly as well.
  4. Rinse well and leave it open to dry.

Important: according to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles do not go in the dishwasher – this protects the surface and the insulation. You'll find more tips on insulated bottles in our guide Water bottle in summer.

Which bottle is suitable?

For a family outing, two 500 ml bottles are often enough: one for the punch, one for water or tea. Both IZY models in our shop are double-walled, rust-free stainless steel, taste-neutral and BPA-free. They stay dry on the outside, which means no condensation in your bag.

You'll find both bottles in our IZY collection. If you're still looking for ideas for the holidays, take a look at our gift ideas for sauna & wellness.

Conclusion

Children's punch in a thermos bottle is quick to make and makes a winter outing more relaxed. Let tea, juice and spices infuse briefly, strain, pour into the preheated bottle and always check the temperature before serving. At the Christmas market: respect the house rules and drink your own punch away from the stalls. For mulled wine, use a separate, clearly different bottle.

Frequently asked questions

How long does children's punch stay warm in a thermos bottle?

According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles keep drinks warm for up to 12 hours. Exactly how warm depends on how hot you fill it, whether you preheated it and how often you open the bottle.

Can I leave orange slices and spices in the bottle?

Better not. Spices keep infusing and make the taste bitter, and pieces of fruit are hard to remove. Strain the punch before filling.

Can I bring my own punch to the Christmas market?

Each market decides for itself. In public spaces it is usually no problem; in enclosed areas there may be house rules. If in doubt, ask the organiser.

How hot can the punch be for children?

It should be pleasantly warm but not hot. Pour it into a cup, let it cool briefly and taste it yourself before your child drinks.

Can I put the bottle in the dishwasher afterwards?

Not our IZY bottles – according to the manufacturer, please clean them by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid.
