Kakao to go: IZY Bottles Thermosflasche Van Gogh Flowers 500 ml mit Blumen-Design

Cocoa to go: hot chocolate and milky coffee in a thermos bottle

Cocoa to go is a small highlight on cold days: on a winter walk, sledging with the family or as a sweet break in the office. In a thermos bottle it stays hot for a long time – but with milk drinks there is more to consider than with tea. Milk spoils faster, and lukewarm milk for hours is not a good idea from a hygiene point of view. Here you will learn how to prepare and take cocoa and milky coffee with you so that they taste good on the go and the bottle stays clean afterwards.

Milk drinks in a thermos bottle: what is special

With tea or coffee without milk, the main question is how long the drink stays hot. With cocoa, hot chocolate or milky coffee, a second point comes in: hygiene. Milk contains protein, fat and sugar – a good breeding ground for germs. According to a common rule of thumb in kitchen hygiene, germs multiply particularly well in the lukewarm range, while very hot or well-chilled food spoils much more slowly.

An insulated bottle keeps a drink warm for a long time, but the temperature drops over time. It is exactly this transition from hot to lukewarm that is tricky with milk drinks. So: cocoa to go is a drink for the next few hours, not for the whole day.

The most important hygiene rules

  • Fill it hot: Heat the milk properly, not just until lukewarm. You do not have to boil it, but it should be hot.
  • Drink it promptly: Plan milk drinks for the next few hours and not for the late afternoon.
  • Do not keep leftovers: Whatever is still in the bottle in the evening gets poured away and is not drunk the next day.
  • Use fresh milk: No milk that has been open in the fridge for a long time.
  • Clean immediately: Rinse the bottle straight after emptying it, before residues dry on.
  • Do not drink directly: Pour some into a cup rather than drinking from the bottle. That way less saliva gets into the rest.

Basic recipe: cocoa to go for 500 ml

This simple recipe is enough for a 500 ml bottle. You can adjust the amounts to taste.

IngredientAmountNote
Milk or plant-based drinkapprox. 450 mlfresh, well chilled from the fridge
Baking cocoa (unsweetened)2–3 tablespoonsalternatively ready-made cocoa powder
Sugar or syrup1–2 tablespoonsusually not needed with ready-made powder
Dark chocolate (optional)20–30 gfor hot chocolate, creamier
Pinch of cinnamon or vanilla (optional)to tastegoes well in winter

Preparation

  1. Mix: Stir the cocoa and sugar into a small splash of cold milk in a pan until smooth, so that no lumps form.
  2. Heat: Add the rest of the milk and heat while stirring until it is hot and steaming. Do not let it boil hard, otherwise it burns easily.
  3. Melt the chocolate: If you want hot chocolate, add the chopped chocolate now and stir until it has melted.
  4. Prepare the bottle: Briefly swirl the bottle out with hot water and empty it.
  5. Fill: Carefully pour in the hot cocoa, leave a little space below the closure and screw it on tightly.

Tip: cocoa settles a little in the bottle over time. Gently swirl the tightly closed bottle before pouring instead of shaking it hard – with hot contents, pressure can otherwise build up.

Ideas for variety

  • Orange and cinnamon: Let a piece of untreated orange peel infuse while heating and remove it before filling, plus a pinch of cinnamon.
  • With a hint of heat: A tiny pinch of chilli or cayenne pepper adds a warming note – dose carefully.
  • Vanilla: A little vanilla extract or the seeds of a pod make the drink rounder without you having to add more sugar.
  • Less sweet: If you want less sugar, use unsweetened baking cocoa and a splash of oat drink and only sweeten on the go as needed.

Whipped cream and marshmallows do not belong in the bottle, by the way – they cannot be transported sensibly on the go and make cleaning harder. If you like them, take them separately and add them to the cup.

Milky coffee and latte to go

The same applies to milky coffee: fill it hot, drink it promptly, clean immediately. An alternative if you are out for longer: take black coffee in the thermos bottle and only add the milk just before drinking, for example from a small chilled portion. That way the coffee stays hot for hours without milk being lukewarm for a long time.

When milk drinks are not a good choice

For a whole day in the office, a long shift or an outing where the bottle has to last until the evening, tea, water or black coffee are the better choice. A cocoa, on the other hand, is perfect if you drink it within the next few hours: on an afternoon walk, at the Christmas market, ice skating or to round off a cold day at the lake.

The right bottle

For hot chocolate on the go, you need a well-insulated, tight bottle that can be cleaned thoroughly by hand. According to the manufacturer, our two IZY bottles are made of double-walled, rustproof stainless steel, keep drinks hot for up to 12 hours and have a leak-proof screw cap. The stainless steel is taste-neutral – after thorough cleaning, the water will not taste of chocolate the next day.

The IZY x Pip Studio “La Dolce Vita” thermos bottle comes in a round gift tin – a lovely little present during Advent. The IZY Bottles Van Gogh Flowers thermos bottle features a colourful floral design inspired by Vincent van Gogh. Both hold 500 ml and can be found in our IZY collection.

Take care with children

Cocoa is especially popular with children. Because an insulated bottle does not get hot on the outside, you cannot tell how hot the contents are. So always check the temperature yourself before pouring a cup for children, and let the cocoa cool a little if necessary. Small children should not drink unsupervised from a bottle with very hot contents.

Cleaning after milk drinks

Milk residues form a film on the inner wall and in the thread and can quickly smell unpleasant. That is why the bottle should be cleaned immediately after cocoa or milky coffee:

  1. Pour out any leftovers and pre-rinse the bottle with lukewarm water. Very hot water can make milk protein stick to the wall.
  2. Brush thoroughly with warm water, a little mild washing-up liquid and a bottle brush.
  3. Clean the lid separately, especially the thread and grooves.
  4. Rinse several times with clear water and leave the bottle and lid to dry open.

According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles should be cleaned by hand and not put in the dishwasher, so that the surface and insulation stay protected.

Conclusion

Cocoa to go and hot chocolate from a thermos bottle make cold days more enjoyable – if you follow a few rules. Fill milk drinks hot, drink them within the next few hours, do not keep leftovers and rinse the bottle thoroughly straight afterwards. For long days, it is better to take tea or black coffee and add the milk just before drinking. With a well-insulated stainless steel bottle like the IZY models, you will have your cocoa with you hot and safely.

Frequently asked questions

How long can cocoa stay in a thermos bottle?

Plan milk drinks for the next few hours. The longer they stand, the more the temperature drops into the lukewarm range in which germs multiply well. You should not keep leftovers.

Can I put milk in a thermos bottle?

Yes, if you fill it hot, drink it promptly and clean the bottle thoroughly straight afterwards. For long days it is better to take milk separately and chilled.

Does cocoa work with plant-based drinks too?

Yes, oat, soya or almond drinks can be used in the same way. The same hygiene rules apply as with cow’s milk.

How do I get a milk smell out of the bottle?

The best way is to prevent it by rinsing immediately, brushing with washing-up liquid and drying it open. If a smell remains, a thorough clean with proven household remedies helps.

Isn’t the cocoa too hot for children?

In a good insulated bottle it stays very hot. Always check the temperature yourself before children drink, and let it cool a little in the cup.
