Thermos bottle for children in winter: warm, but not too hot

A thermos bottle for children in winter is worth its weight in gold when sledging, at the playground or on a long walk. Little hands quickly get numb in the cold, and a warm sip of tea during a break noticeably lifts the mood. At the same time, one more rule applies to children than to adults: warm is good, hot is dangerous. Here you'll learn which drinks are suitable, how to get the drinking temperature right and how to use the bottle sensibly in family life.

Why children need a warm drinking break in winter

When romping in the snow, many children forget to drink altogether. Thirst is often felt less strongly in the cold, while at the same time you sweat more under a snowsuit and hat than you'd think. A cold juice from a plastic bottle isn't very tempting then – a warm tea, on the other hand, is.

A break with a warm drink has another side effect: it brings calm to the outing. Sit down, cup in hand, take a breath. Especially on longer trips, this helps keep spirits up.

The right thermos bottle for children in winter

For family outings, a double-walled stainless steel bottle has proven itself. It keeps drinks warm for a long time, is robust and easy to clean. Both of our IZY bottles are double-walled, rust-free stainless steel, BPA-free and taste-neutral. According to the manufacturer, they keep drinks warm for up to 12 hours.

Important for context: our IZY bottles are not special children's bottles with a straw or flip lid. They have a leak-proof screw cap and are therefore mainly something for the adults who carry the drink and pour it into a cup. That has an advantage: you stay in control of the temperature.

Scald protection: the most important rule

A well-insulated bottle keeps drinks hot for hours. What's an advantage for the parents' coffee can be dangerous for children. Children's skin is more sensitive than adults', and a big sip of tea that's too hot can irritate or scald the mouth and throat. That's why:

  1. Don't fill it boiling hot if the child drinks from it directly. For a child's own bottle, let the tea cool down considerably first.
  2. Always taste it yourself. Pour some into the cup and test a sip before handing it over. Your own sense is the best guide here.
  3. Wait briefly. In the cold air, a drink in a cup cools down quickly. A minute or two is usually enough.
  4. Mixing is allowed. A splash of cold juice or water in the cup brings very hot tea to drinking temperature immediately.
  5. Do the pouring yourself. Small children shouldn't open hot bottles on their own. Steam can escape or something can spill when unscrewing.

A simple rule of thumb: the drink should be warm enough that you would drink it yourself in one big sip without blowing on it.

Which drinks are suitable for children

Mild, caffeine-free drinks work well on the go. Common and popular choices are:

  • Fruit tea: rosehip, apple or berries – fruity and caffeine-free.
  • Rooibos: mild, slightly sweet, doesn't turn bitter even when it stands for a long time.
  • Herbal tea: for example mild fennel or chamomile tea, if your child likes it.
  • Warm water with a little apple juice: simple, not very sweet, quick to make.

Black and green tea contain caffeine and are therefore less suitable for children. It's best to be sparing with sugar or honey – the sweetness of a little juice is often enough. Cocoa is popular with children, but as a milk drink it needs a bit more attention to hygiene: milk shouldn't stand lukewarm in the bottle for hours. For outings of one to two hours that's fine; for the whole day, tea is the better choice.

For health questions, for example about certain herbs for very young children, it's best to check with your paediatrician.

Typical winter outings with children

Sledging

When sledging, you're often outside longer than planned. Pack the bottle in a small backpack that you carry, not on the sledge. Breaks at the bottom of the hill are a good time for a cup of tea.

Playground and park

At the playground, a small supply is often enough. A 500 ml container of warm tea is enough for several cups and fits in any changing bag or shoulder bag. Because the outside of our IZY bottles stays dry according to the manufacturer, nothing gets wet.

Winter walk and lantern parade

On walks at dusk, it cools down quickly. A warm drink along the way makes the last stretch easier. If you'd like to take a fruity punch with you in the Advent season, pay attention to the temperature here too.

How much should you take?

That depends on the length of the outing and the number of people. A few pointers from family life:

  • Short outing (one to two hours): a 500 ml bottle is usually enough for several small cups.
  • Half a day with two or more kids: plan on two bottles or refill on the way, for example at a café.
  • A whole day: pack an additional simple bottle of water. Tea is good, but water in between is part of it.

Better a little too much than too little: whatever's left you can drink on the way home or pour out at home.

Preparation in the morning

  1. Preheat the bottle with hot water and pour it out.
  2. Brew the tea and remove the bag after the steeping time.
  3. Fill the parents' bottle hot; for a child's own bottle, let it cool first.
  4. Pack cups – one per child avoids arguments.
  5. Screw the closure on tightly and stand the bottle upright in the backpack.

Cleaning after the outing

In the evening, empty the bottle, rinse it with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid, clean it with a bottle brush and leave it open to dry. According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles do not go in the dishwasher. Especially after cocoa or juice, it's worth not waiting until the next day.

Our bottles for family outings

Both models hold 500 ml and cost €24.90 each:

If you're out with two bottles – one with tea for the little ones, one with coffee for the grown-ups – the different designs help avoid mix-ups. You'll find both in our IZY collection. And for a winter walk by the lake, also take a look at our article New Year's swim: what to bring.

Conclusion

A thermos bottle for children in winter makes outings more relaxed: warm tea during the break, less whining, more time outdoors. The temperature is what matters. Adults pour, taste first and let the drink cool briefly in the cup or mix it with something cold. Mild, caffeine-free teas are the best choice, and after the outing the bottle is washed by hand.

Frequently asked questions

According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles keep drinks warm for up to 12 hours – which is exactly why tasting first is so important.
