Why drinks warm up so quickly in summer
Heat reaches your drink in three ways: through direct sunlight on the bottle, through the warm ambient air and through contact with warm surfaces such as sand, a car seat or your palm. A thin-walled disposable bottle offers hardly any resistance. In the blazing sun, cold water inside reaches air temperature within a short time – or higher if the bottle is lying in the car.
So if you simply put your water bottle down anywhere in summer, it loses its chill quickly. Then there is condensation: when a cold drink is in a simple bottle, the outside “sweats”. Your bag gets damp, and the drink absorbs additional heat from its surroundings.
What a double-walled water bottle does in summer
Double-walled stainless steel bottles have two walls with an insulating gap between them. As a result, heat from outside reaches the drink only very slowly. According to the manufacturer, our two IZY bottles keep cold drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot drinks hot for up to 12 hours. Because the outer wall does not get cold, no condensation forms according to the product description – your bag stays dry. Why that is, we explain in detail in the article Water bottle without condensation.
| Bottle type | Keeps cool in summer | Condensation outside | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disposable plastic bottle | barely, warms up quickly | yes | Emergencies, short trips |
| Single-walled stainless steel or glass bottle | only briefly | yes | Office, indoors, sport with refill options |
| Double-walled stainless steel bottle (e.g. IZY) | according to the manufacturer, cold for up to 24 hours | no | Beach, lake, day trips, car, sauna |
Which materials are available in general and what speaks for them is covered in the comparison Drinking bottle made of stainless steel, plastic or glass.
Our two IZY bottles for summer
In our shop we carry two models, both 500 ml and with the same core features: double-walled stainless steel that does not rust, a leak-proof screw cap, BPA-free and taste-neutral.
- IZY x Pip Studio “La Dolce Vita”: playful Pip Studio pattern, comes in a round gift tin. According to the description, it stays dry and pleasantly tempered on the outside – so it can go in your bag next to your phone or documents.
- IZY Bottles Van Gogh Flowers: colourful floral design after Vincent van Gogh, slim shape that, according to the manufacturer, fits in bags, backpacks and cup holders.
As a water bottle in summer, 500 ml is a good companion for a few hours. For a whole day at the beach in the heat, one filling is usually not enough – plan to refill or take a second bottle.
How to keep your water bottle cold for longer in summer
- Pre-chill: Fill the empty bottle with ice-cold water for a few minutes, pour it out and only then add the actual drink. That way the drink does not have to cool the inner wall first.
- Fill it cold: The colder the drink when you pour it in, the longer it stays cool. Water from the fridge is better than water from the tap.
- Add ice cubes: A few ice cubes, as long as they fit through the opening. They keep the temperature down even further.
- Fill it as full as possible: Less air inside means less heat stored along with the drink.
- Close the lid quickly: Leaving it open for long lets warm air in.
- Keep it in the shade: Even an insulated bottle has an easier job if it is not standing in the sun for hours.
More details on filling correctly are in the article Filling a thermos bottle properly. And by the way, the bottle does not belong in the freezer – the article Thermos bottle in the freezer? explains why.
What can go into your water bottle in summer
According to the manufacturer, the IZY bottles are made for hot and cold drinks; water, tea, coffee, infused water and iced tea are among those explicitly mentioned. In summer, good options are:
- Water with ice cubes: the classic for the beach and sport.
- Infused water: water with cucumber, mint or lemon – ideas in the article Infused water recipes.
- Homemade iced tea: with little sugar – the basic recipe is in Making iced tea yourself.
- Juice spritzer: no problem without fizz; for sparkling drinks see the FAQ.
On hot days, you should not carry milk drinks and smoothies around for hours, not even in an insulated bottle. What matters here is covered in the article Smoothie to go.
Keeping your water bottle clean in summer
Warmth and leftover juice or tea are a good environment for germs. That is why the following applies especially in summer:
- Empty and rinse the bottle at the end of every day; do not leave leftovers in it overnight.
- According to the manufacturer, clean it by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid – not in the dishwasher, so the design and insulation last a long time.
- Do not forget the lid and seal.
- Let it dry open and upside down before closing it.

Your water bottle on the go in summer: beach, bike, car, sauna
- Beach and lake: Put the bottle in the shade or wrap it in a towel in your bag. More on this in the article Water bottle on the beach.
- Bike: In the bottle cage, the bottle is often in the sun – a double-walled bottle has a clear advantage here.
- Car: Do not leave it behind the windscreen or on the dashboard; the footwell or your bag is better.
- Sauna: Drinking is part of a sauna day in summer too – cool water during the breaks. When and how much is covered in the article Drinking in the sauna.
Common mistakes
- Filling in lukewarm water and hoping it will cool: The bottle holds temperature; it does not cool by itself.
- Bottle half empty with lots of air: The cold lasts for a shorter time.
- Leaving leftovers overnight: Not a good idea, especially in warm weather.
- Forgetting the bottle in the car: Even an insulated water bottle warms up eventually in summer if it lies in the sun behind the windscreen for hours.
- Dishwasher: Not suitable according to the manufacturer.
You will find both models in our IZY collection.

Conclusion
A double-walled water bottle in summer makes the difference between cold and lukewarm water. According to the manufacturer, the IZY bottles keep cold drinks cool for up to 24 hours and stay dry on the outside. To make that work in practice: pre-chill, fill ice-cold and as full as possible, close the lid and keep it in the shade. Add daily rinsing and hand washing – and you will have a fresh, cold drink with you on every hot day.
Frequently asked questions
How long does water stay cold in the IZY bottle?
According to the manufacturer, up to 24 hours. How long it is in practice depends on how cold the drink is when you fill it, how full the bottle is and how often you open it.
Can I put ice cubes in the bottle?
Yes, as long as they fit through the opening. They keep the drink extra cool.
Can I fill it with sparkling drinks?
The product descriptions do not say anything about this. Carbonation builds up pressure in a tightly sealed bottle, especially in warm weather. Open the bottle carefully in that case, or if in doubt, fill it with still water.
Can the bottle go in the freezer?
No. Frozen liquid expands. For cold drinks, pre-chilled water and ice cubes are enough.
Will my bag get wet if there is cold water inside?
Not with the IZY bottles. According to the manufacturer, the insulation prevents condensation on the outside.
