Hammam towel for children: size, weight and safe changing at the beach

A hammam towel for children is above all one thing: light. Anyone heading to the beach, outdoor pool or lake with children already carries plenty – spare clothes, snacks, sunscreen, sand toys. Thick terry towels for every child quickly make the bag twice as heavy. Flat-woven hammam towels are lighter, dry faster and simply let go of sand. In this guide you will learn which size suits which age, what matters when it comes to weight, how changing at the beach works safely and calmly, and where terry can still be the better choice for children.

Why a hammam towel is practical for children

Children don’t go into the water once, they go ten times. Each time the towel gets wet, and after the third time a terry towel is a heavy, sandy lump. A hammam towel absorbs moisture well but releases it quickly. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and in about 60 minutes indoors.

  • Light enough for a child’s backpack: A 180 × 100 cm towel from us weighs from approx. 270 g depending on the model – many children carry that themselves.
  • Sand falls off: The smooth surface can be shaken out. In terry loops, sand gets stuck and ends up in the car later.
  • Big enough to wrap up in: A large towel wraps a child up completely when they feel chilly after swimming.
  • Versatile: Play mat, sun protection, privacy screen for changing and blanket for a nap in the shade.

Hammam towel for children: which size suits which age?

There are no fixed age limits – children grow at different rates. This overview helps you get your bearings:

AgeRecommendationSize / weight
ToddlersMini hammam towel Diamant for drying face, hands and hair, plus a large towel for wrapping upapprox. 90 × 45 cm, approx. 120 g
Pre-school childrena light large towel, e.g. the Hammam towel SULTANapprox. 180 × 100 cm, approx. 270 g
School childrentheir own towel in their favourite colour, e.g. the Hammam towel ADRIA or Hammam towel Ocean180 × 100 cm, approx. 290–400 g
The whole familyBeach towel Coastline XXL as a shared lying surface240 × 200 cm, approx. 1.2 kg

A hammam towel for children doesn’t have to be smaller than the parents’ one. The large format in particular is practical: it is enough for wrapping up, lying on and as a privacy screen. Smaller children also get a mini towel they can handle themselves.

Weight: what children can carry themselves

Many children want to carry their own backpack – and they should. To keep the backpack from getting too heavy, every item counts. A light hammam towel for children fits rolled up next to a water bottle and snack box. Our lightest large towels weigh approx. 270 g (SULTAN, Towel To Go), ADRIA approx. 290 g, Ocean approx. 400 g. A large terry bath towel of the same size is usually much heavier – and even heavier when wet.

Our tip: let your child choose their own towel. A child who knows their colour finds their own towel on a crowded lawn faster and takes better care of it.

Beach, outdoor pool or lake: what matters in each case

At the beach

Sand is the biggest issue. A hammam towel can be shaken out vigorously without everything getting caught in loops. For a nap in the shade of the parasol, a large towel makes a pleasant, airy blanket.

At the outdoor pool

Here space counts: lawn, locker, pool bag. One towel per child in their own colour avoids arguments. Details on the lawn and locker can be found in our guide to the outdoor pool.

At the lake

At the lake the grass is often damp and there are rarely changing rooms. One towel as a mat and a second for drying off is particularly practical here.

Changing at the beach: safe and relaxed

Children like to change quickly – preferably in the middle of the lawn. Many parents today pay more attention to children not standing unprotected in front of everyone, partly because photos may be taken at public bathing spots. With a hammam towel this is easy:

  1. Wrap the towel around the child: Place the large towel around the shoulders and hold it at the front or tuck it in under the arms.
  2. Change swimwear underneath: Wet swimsuit off, dry clothes on – the towel stays around them the whole time.
  3. A curtain for two: With small children, one adult holds the towel like a curtain while the other helps with changing.
  4. Spread it out afterwards: The towel dries in the sun while the child is already playing again.

You yourself can change even more comfortably with a bathing poncho. For children, the towel is often the more flexible solution because it grows with them and doubles as towel and blanket.

Safety and sun: what parents look out for

  • Don’t cover the pram with a towel: A towel draped over a pram traps heat underneath. A parasol or a shady spot is better.
  • Shade instead of midday sun: For small children a spot in the shade is common and sensible. A towel over the shoulders does not replace sunscreen or sun-protective clothing.
  • Not over the face: During a nap, only pull the towel up to the chest.
  • For health questions – for example about sensitive skin – it is better to consult a doctor.

Feel and material: an honest look

Our hammam towels are made of 100 % cotton; SULTAN, the Mini hammam towel Diamant and Manolia are also made of OEKO-TEX-certified cotton. New hammam towels feel a little firmer at first and get softer with every wash. So wash it once before first use – at 30 °C, without fabric softener.

To be honest: for babies and very young children who mainly want to be cuddled after a bath, a fluffy hooded terry towel is often more pleasant. From the age when children carry things themselves and run around, a hammam towel for children really shows its strengths.

Tips for families

  • One colour per child: That way there is no arguing over whose towel is whose.
  • Pack a spare towel: Anyone who goes into the water often will appreciate a dry mini towel for face and hair.
  • Hang them up straight away at home: Don’t leave wet towels in the pool bag overnight.
  • More beach towels: You will find a larger selection for the family in our beach towels collection.

Conclusion

A hammam towel for children is light enough for their own backpack, dries between two swims and simply lets go of sand. For toddlers, a mini towel complements the large one, school children get their own in their favourite colour, and there is an XXL surface for the whole family. When changing, the towel serves as a privacy screen – and for babies a fluffy hooded towel is perfectly fine too.

Frequently asked questions

From what age is a hammam towel suitable for children?

As a play and lying blanket from an early age. For drying small children, a mini towel is handier; from pre-school age many children use a large towel.

Is a hammam towel soft enough for children’s skin?

It feels smoother than terry and gets softer with every wash. Wash it before first use. For questions about sensitive skin, consult a doctor.

What size do I need for a child?

A 180 × 100 cm towel suits most children because it is big enough for wrapping up and lying on. Add a mini towel of approx. 90 × 45 cm for face and hair.

Does a hammam towel keep a child warm when they are cold?

It keeps the wind off and dries quickly, but it is thinner than terry. On cooler days, pack a jumper as well.

How do I wash children’s hammam towels?

At 30 °C, without fabric softener, air-dried. Shake out sand beforehand and pre-treat sunscreen stains.
