Hammam towel at the outdoor pool: lawn, sun lounger, locker and hygiene
Share
A hammam towel at the outdoor pool solves several small problems at once: the locker is tight, the lawn is crowded, the pool bag is heavy and a wet towel is still damp in the afternoon. Flat-woven cotton takes up little space, dries between two swims and lets go of grass and crumbs easily. In this guide you will learn which towel suits which spot at the pool, how to handle lounger, locker and hygiene, and where a hammam towel reaches its limits.

Why a hammam towel works so well at the outdoor pool
A day at the pool is all about switching: into the water, out into the sun, a quick shower, lie down again. A classic terry bath towel soaks up water and becomes heavy. A hammam towel absorbs moisture too, but it is thinly woven and releases it quickly into the air. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and in about 60 minutes indoors. At the pool this means: by the time you come back from your next swim, your towel is usually ready to use again.
Three more practical points:
- Little volume: Rolled up, a 180 × 100 cm towel fits into a small bag or next to clothes and shoes in the locker.
- Smooth surface: Blades of grass, sand from the beach volleyball court and crumbs from the chips plate hardly stick and can be shaken out.
- Versatile: Lying surface, bath towel, sun protection for your shoulders and privacy screen for changing – one towel does several jobs.
Hammam towel or terry: an honest comparison for the pool
A hammam towel is not the better choice in every situation. The overview below shows where it scores and where terry has advantages.
| Criterion | Hammam towel | Terry bath towel |
|---|---|---|
| Space in the locker | small when rolled, fits next to clothes | often fills half a compartment on its own |
| Weight when dry | approx. 270–470 g depending on the model (180 × 100 cm) | usually much heavier at the same size |
| Drying in the sun | approx. 30 minutes (our experience) | often still damp in the afternoon |
| Grass and sand | easy to shake out | gets caught in the loops |
| Padding on hard ground | thin, hardly any padding | somewhat softer |
| Feel when drying off | smooth, a little firmer at first | fluffy |
Bottom line: if you swim a lot, want to carry little and arrive by bike or train, a hammam towel at the outdoor pool is the better choice. If you lie on concrete slabs all day and like it soft, put a sleeping mat or a second towel underneath.
Which towel for which spot at the pool?
Lawn, sun lounger by the pool or family spot under a tree – every spot has different requirements. This is how our towels fit in:
| Spot | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn on your own | Hammam towel Ocean, 180 × 100 cm, approx. 400 g | enough space to stretch out, six colours that are easy to spot |
| Sun lounger by the pool | Hammam towel Ocean StayOn, 200 × 70 cm | sewn-in pocket slides over the backrest, does not slip |
| Family or couple on the lawn | Beach towel Coastline XXL, 240 × 200 cm, approx. 1.2 kg | one surface for everyone instead of four separate towels |
| Travelling as light as possible | Hammam towel SULTAN, approx. 270 g | one of the lightest towels at 180 × 100 cm |
| Extra for face and hair | Mini hammam towel Diamant, approx. 90 × 45 cm, approx. 120 g | the large towel stays dry on the lawn |
The sun lounger: taken, but fair
Many outdoor pools have only a few loungers right by the water. A towel that is just laid on top slides off when you get up or is blown onto the ground by the wind. With the StayOn you pull the sewn-in pocket over the backrest – the towel stays in place, even when you turn over or pop into the water. Our guide to the lounger pocket (link below) explains how it works in detail.
A word on fairness: in some pools the house or bathing rules do not allow reserving loungers with towels for hours. Follow the rules on site. A towel that stays put while you swim is something different from a lounger that remains empty from morning to evening.
Packing your locker and pool bag cleverly
Lockers at outdoor pools are often narrow. This is how your hammam towel for the pool and everything else fits in:
- Fold the towel lengthwise into thirds and roll it tightly: This gives you a handy roll that stands upright in the locker.
- Roll your clothes into the towel: Lay T-shirt and shorts on the spread-out towel and roll everything up together – one bundle instead of three.
- Keep wet and dry apart: Pack a small bag for wet swimwear so the roll stays dry.
- Valuables on top: Keys, phone and money go into a small pouch on top so you don’t have to rummage.
If you come by bike, you will notice the difference most: two hammam towels together often weigh less than a single large terry bath towel.
Hygiene and chlorine: what you should know
At the pool, your hammam towel comes into contact with chlorinated water, sunscreen and grass. A few simple habits keep it looking good for a long time:
- Shower before swimming: This is common practice in most pools anyway and part of the bathing rules. It keeps the water cleaner.
- Rinse off briefly after swimming: Less chlorine gets onto the towel and your skin. Tips for caring for your skin afterwards can be found in our article on skin care after swimming.
- One towel per person: Sharing is impractical at the pool – everyone prefers to dry off with their own towel.
- Let sunscreen soak in: Apply it, wait a few minutes and only then lie down. That way fewer greasy marks end up on the cotton.
- Hang it up as soon as you get home: A wet towel left in the bag overnight quickly smells musty.
After the pool, wash your hammam towel at 30 °C without fabric softener and preferably let it air-dry. A detailed care guide can be found in our article on washing hammam towels.
Limits of the hammam towel at the outdoor pool
To be honest, there are situations in which a hammam towel at the pool is not ideal:
- Cool evening: When the wind picks up, a thin towel keeps you less warm than a thick bathrobe or a bathing poncho. A poncho from our poncho collection is then the more comfortable solution for changing and warming up.
- Hard ground: On stone slabs a hammam towel provides hardly any padding.
- First use: New towels feel a little firmer at first and only absorb really well after a few washes. So wash it once before your first pool visit.

Conclusion
A hammam towel at the outdoor pool saves space in the locker, weight in your bag and waiting time while it dries. For the lawn a 180 × 100 cm towel is enough, for the sun lounger by the pool the StayOn with its pocket is the most relaxed solution, and families take one large surface for everyone. If you expect hard ground or cool evenings, add a mat or a poncho – then you are well equipped for every day at the pool.
Frequently asked questions
Does chlorinated water damage a hammam towel?
Brief contact with chlorinated water is not a problem. If you rinse off after swimming and wash the towel at 30 °C after your day at the pool, it will stay nice for a long time.
Is one hammam towel enough for the whole day?
A hammam towel is usually enough at the pool because it dries in between. If you swim often, bring an extra small towel for drying off so your lying towel stays dry.
Is a hammam towel big enough to lie on?
At 180 × 100 cm an adult can lie on it comfortably. For two people or with children, an XXL towel measuring 240 × 200 cm is more practical.
May I reserve a lounger with my towel?
Each pool sets its own rules. Some bathing rules prohibit reserving. A towel on the lounger while you go for a quick swim is usually fine – if in doubt, ask the staff.
How do I get blades of grass out of the towel?
Simply give it a good shake. Hardly anything sticks to the smooth surface, and any remaining bits come out in the wash at the latest.
