Facial steam bath at home: instructions, duration and who should skip it
Share
A facial steam bath is one of the simplest little care breaks there is: a bowl of hot water, a towel over your head and a few minutes of peace. Many people like the feeling of warm, moist air on their skin, and afterwards the face often looks fresher and feels softer. In this article we show you how to do a facial steam bath safely at home – with distance, duration and frequency, the right cleansing beforehand and care afterwards. And we say honestly what steam can do, what it can't, and who is better off skipping it.

What a facial steam bath can do – and what it can't
During a facial steam bath, warm water vapour surrounds the skin. The top layer of skin absorbs moisture and becomes softer, and the skin is gently warmed through. Many people find this pleasantly relaxing, and make-up residue or flakes of skin are easier to remove afterwards.
A common myth is that steam "opens" the pores and cold water then "closes" them. But pores have no muscles that could open or close. What actually happens: warmth and moisture make sebum and the skin's surface a little softer. That's all – and that's enough. Promises such as "helps against spots" or "cleanses the skin from within" should be read with caution. A facial steam bath is a cosmetic feel-good treatment, not a therapy. If you have skin problems, the right place to go is a dermatologist.
What you need for your facial steam bath
- A large, heat-resistant bowl made of ceramic, glass or stainless steel. It should stand firmly.
- Hot water from the kettle.
- A large towel to place over your head and the bowl so the steam doesn't escape straight away.
- A small towel for patting dry. According to the product description, the Mini hammam towel Diamant measuring approx. 90 × 45 cm is also intended as a face towel; it's made of 100 % OEKO-TEX-certified cotton and can be washed at 30 °C.
- A hairband or clip so your hair doesn't fall into your face.
- A mild cleanser and face cream for before and after.
- Optional: a chamomile tea bag for the scent.
Facial steam bath step by step
The following table summarises the most important guidelines. They are based on common recommendations; if anything feels unpleasant, the rule is always: stop.
| Point | Guideline | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Boil, then let it cool for 2–3 min | Steam straight from bubbling water is too hot |
| Distance | approx. 30 cm from the water surface | Protection against scalding |
| Duration | 5–10 min | Longer tends to dry the skin out |
| Frequency | Once a week, at most twice | Skin needs time between treatments |
| Afterwards | Pat dry, cool down briefly, moisturise | Don't let the moisture evaporate |
1. Cleanse your face thoroughly
A facial steam bath always starts with clean skin. Make-up, sunscreen and sweat should come off first, otherwise you just steam them in. A mild foam is well suited for this. The VEGAN FOX cleansing foam for normal skin contains chamomile and glycerin and, according to the manufacturer, is intended for daily cleansing morning and evening: apply to the dampened skin of face and neck, massage in gently, rinse thoroughly. There's a separate version for dry skin; which one suits you is explained in our article on facial cleansing with foam, gel or milk.
2. Prepare the water
Boil the water in the kettle and pour it into the bowl until it's about half full. Let it stand for two to three minutes before you lean over it. If you like, hang a chamomile tea bag in it – that gives a pleasant scent. Essential oils, on the other hand, aren't necessary and can irritate the eyes and sensitive skin.
3. Under the towel
Sit comfortably at a table, tie your hair back and lean over the bowl at a distance of about 30 cm. Place the large towel over your head and the bowl so that it forms a small tent. Close your eyes and breathe calmly. If it gets too hot or stuffy, lift the towel briefly or increase the distance.
4. Enjoy five to ten minutes
Five to ten minutes are enough for a facial steam bath. Longer brings no benefit – on the contrary, your skin may seem drier afterwards. Set a timer so you don't have to watch the clock.
5. Pat dry, cool down, moisturise
Afterwards, pat your face dry with a clean, soft towel – don't rub. If you like, splash a little lukewarm water on your face and wait a minute or two until your skin no longer feels warm. Then comes the care: according to the manufacturer, you apply the VEGAN FOX face cream with almond oil, avocado oil, chamomile and panthenol to the cleansed skin of face and neck. Letting your skin cool down briefly after warmth before applying cream is something we also recommend after the sauna.
Who is better off skipping a facial steam bath
A facial steam bath is unproblematic for most people, but not for everyone. It is usually advised against in these cases:
- Dilated capillaries and redness (couperose, rosacea): warmth can intensify redness.
- Inflamed or irritated skin, sunburn, open areas, fresh scars.
- Cold sores or other acute skin infections.
- Very dry or sensitive skin and acute eczema: steam can put additional strain on the skin.
- Respiratory or circulatory complaints: hot steam can be unpleasant.
- Children only under supervision and at a large distance, because hot water in a bowl can easily tip over.
If you're unsure or have a skin condition: if you have health questions, consult a doctor.
Typical facial steam bath mistakes
- Too hot: bubbling boiling water directly under your face. Always let it cool briefly and keep your distance.
- Too long: 20 minutes under the towel is too much of a good thing. Five to ten minutes are enough.
- Uncleansed skin: remove make-up and sunscreen beforehand.
- Squeezing afterwards: squeezing spots and blackheads yourself after steaming can irritate the skin. Better leave that to a beautician.
- Exfoliating straight afterwards: the skin is more sensitive after warmth. A peel such as the lactic acid peel for the face is better done on another evening.
- Too often: steaming every day achieves nothing. Once a week is enough.
Facial steam bath and sauna: the difference
In the sauna and especially in the steam room, the skin on your face also gets warm and moist. The difference: there your whole body is affected, and you stay in the heat longer. If you go to the sauna regularly, you don't necessarily need a facial steam bath as well. How to care for your face around a sauna visit is described in our article Facial care around the sauna. The facial steam bath, by contrast, is the small version for home when you only have ten minutes.

Conclusion
A facial steam bath is quick to do and a pleasant little break for many: cleanse your face, let the water cool briefly, five to ten minutes under the towel at a distance of about 30 cm, then pat dry, let your skin cool down and moisturise. Don't expect miracles – pores don't open, and skin problems don't disappear with steam. If you have redness, irritated skin or a skin condition, it's better to skip it and ask a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a facial steam bath last?

How often can I do a facial steam bath?
Once a week is a good rhythm, at most twice. With sensitive skin, rather less often.

No, pores have no muscles and cannot open or close. Warmth and moisture do, however, make the skin's surface softer.
What goes into the water?
Plain water is enough. If you like a scent, use a chamomile tea bag. It's better to avoid essential oils, as they can irritate eyes and skin.
What do I do after a facial steam bath?
