Evening routine to unwind: your 30-minute plan for every evening
Share
An evening routine isn't a wellness programme for special occasions but a small, fixed sequence that looks the same every evening. That is exactly where its value lies: when the steps are always the same, you no longer have to think – you simply notice that the day is now over. In this article you get a simple evening routine to unwind that fits into around 30 minutes: screen off, warm shower, face care, into the bathrobe, tea. Plus a 10-minute version for busy days and the typical mistakes that make good intentions fail.

What makes a good evening routine
Many guides fill the evening routine with ten or more points: yoga, journal, meditation, reading, a walk, a gratitude list. That sounds nice, but in everyday life it often fails for lack of time. A routine you only manage on Sundays isn't a routine. Three principles help you find a sequence that still works on a Tuesday after a long working day:
- Short: 20 to 30 minutes are enough. Better half an hour every evening than two hours once a week.
- Always the same order: the repetition is the actual signal. After a few weeks the sequence almost runs by itself.
- Start with the body, not the head: warm water, a soft fabric on your skin and a warm drink are easier to put into practice than "switching off" at the push of a button.
It also helps to draw a line: an extended spa evening with friends or an after-work sauna are special occasions. The evening routine is what happens on all the other evenings.
The evening routine at a glance
The following plan assumes you start about an hour before going to bed. The times are guidelines – adapt them to your evening.
| Step | Duration | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Screen off, lights down | 1 min | A charging spot for your phone outside the bedroom |
| 2. Warm shower | 5–10 min | Shower gel with a scent you like |
| 3. Cleanse and moisturise your face | 3–5 min | Mild cleanser, face cream |
| 4. Into the bathrobe | – | Light bathrobe |
| 5. Tea instead of phone | 10–15 min | Herbal tea, thermos bottle or teapot |
| 6. Close the day | 2–3 min | Paper and pen |
Evening routine step by step
1. Screen off, lights down
The first step is the hardest and at the same time the most effective: put your phone away – ideally at a fixed charging spot outside the bedroom. As long as messages, emails and feeds keep running, your head stays in the day. At the same time, dim the lights: a floor lamp instead of the ceiling light, only the mirror light in the bathroom. This moment is the real starting signal of your evening routine.
2. Warm shower
A warm shower is the simplest way to literally rinse off the day. It doesn't have to be long; five to ten minutes are enough. Choose a pleasantly warm temperature, not hot – water that is too hot tends to dry out the skin. A scent you only use in the evening can become a fixed signal. The VEGAN FOX shower gel comes in linden blossom, grapefruit and red grape; according to the manufacturer you can use it as needed, even daily. Which scent suits which mood is described in our article on the shower gel scents.
3. Cleanse and moisturise your face
In the evening, make-up, sunscreen and the dust of the day should come off your face. Cleanse with a mild product, pat your skin dry and then apply a small amount of cream to your face and neck. The VEGAN FOX face cream with almond and avocado oil is intended for morning and evening and also contains chamomile and panthenol. Consciously take a minute to apply it and massage the cream in with gentle movements – that's care and a little break at the same time. How much cream you need and in what order to proceed is explained in our article How to apply face cream properly.
4. Into the bathrobe
Instead of jumping into joggers and a jumper after the shower, slip into a bathrobe. That sounds like a detail, but it changes the feel of the evening: you're no longer in everyday mode but "done". A light cotton bathrobe is ideal because it absorbs remaining moisture and doesn't weigh heavily on your shoulders. The Trimita Barok bathrobe is made of 100 % Turkish cotton – not terry, but light and quick-drying, with a tie belt and pockets. When the evenings get cool in winter, you'll find warmer alternatives in our article Bathrobe in winter.
5. Tea instead of phone
Now sit down – sofa, armchair, bed – and drink something warm. A caffeine-free herbal tea is usual in the evening, such as chamomile, lemon balm, peppermint or rooibos. A practical trick for the evening routine: brew the tea right after dinner and pour it into a thermos bottle. Then it's ready and waiting for you after the shower, and you don't have to go back to the kitchen. The IZY x Pip Studio thermos bottle "La Dolce Vita" holds 500 ml and, according to the manufacturer, keeps drinks hot for up to 12 hours. How to keep tea in the bottle from turning bitter is covered in our article Tea in a thermos bottle.
During these ten to fifteen minutes you read a few pages, listen to music or simply sit. Without a screen.
6. Close the day
Finally, take two or three minutes with paper and pen. Write down what's important tomorrow and what's still on your mind. This isn't a journaling obligation but a place to put things down: what's on paper, you no longer have to hold on to. Many people then deliberately put the note away, for example next to the front door or on the desk.
Short version: evening routine in 10 minutes
On some days there simply isn't enough time. Then a shortened evening routine is better than none – what matters is that the order stays the same:
- Phone to the charging spot, dim the lights (1 minute).
- Cleanse and moisturise your face instead of showering (3 minutes).
- Bathrobe on, a glass of water or a few sips of tea from the prepared bottle (5 minutes).
- Note one sentence for tomorrow (1 minute).
If you're just building the routine, you can also start with this short version and add the shower later.
Typical evening routine mistakes
- Too much at once: hardly anyone keeps up ten new habits at the same time. Start with three steps and only expand once they've stuck.
- Taking the phone along "just briefly": one look at the news is enough to be back in the day. That's why the fixed charging spot is step one.
- Showering too hot: pleasantly warm is enough. Very hot water feels good briefly but tends to dry out the skin.
- Caffeine in the evening: black and green tea contain caffeine. Herbal teas are the usual choice for the evening.
- Expecting perfection: a skipped evening isn't a failure. You simply carry on the next day.
If you permanently find it hard to switch off or sleep badly, an evening routine is no substitute for medical advice. If you have health questions, consult a doctor.

Conclusion
A good evening routine is short, always the same and starts with the body: phone away, warm shower, face care, into the bathrobe, tea, a note for tomorrow. Around 30 minutes are enough, on busy days ten. More important than any single product is that you stick with it – after a few weeks the plan becomes a habit you look forward to in the evening.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an evening routine take?
20 to 30 minutes is a good frame. On busy days a short version of about 10 minutes is enough, as long as the order stays the same.
When should I start my evening routine?
About an hour before going to bed. That leaves time for tea and a few quiet minutes without a screen after the care steps.
Shower in the evening or in the morning?
That's a matter of taste. For a relaxing evening routine, though, a warm shower in the evening is a particularly clear signal that the day is over.
Which tea suits an evening routine?
Caffeine-free herbal teas such as chamomile, lemon balm, peppermint or rooibos are usual. Black and green tea contain caffeine.
What do I do if I can't keep up the evening routine?
Choose fewer steps. Start with phone away, face care and bathrobe, and only add the rest once these three steps have stuck.
