After-work sauna: relaxed in two hours after the working day

Many people think of the sauna as a long day at a spa. But an after-work sauna can be just as relaxing – and it fits into any normal week. If you are well prepared, you need little more than two hours: two calm rounds, enough rest, a shower, done. Here you will find out how a short visit works, which time of day suits it, what to eat beforehand and what a bag that is always ready looks like.

What an after-work sauna looks like

A schedule of about two hours that works well in most saunas:

Step Time (approx.)
Arrive, get changed, shower, dry off 15 minutes
1st sauna round, cool down, break 40 minutes
2nd sauna round, cool down, break 40 minutes
Shower, skincare, get dressed, dry hair 20 to 25 minutes

A round usually lasts 8 to 12 minutes, with a break at least as long. You can read more about the common guidelines in the article How long should you stay in the sauna? If you have more time, add a third round – but it isn't necessary.

Three variations for different evenings

Not every evening offers the same amount of time. Instead of skipping the after-work sauna altogether, you can adapt it:

The short version: about 90 minutes

Two shorter rounds, but don't cut the breaks. There is less time for dressing and drying your hair – with a well-packed bag it still works. This variation suits days when you still have plans for the evening.

The classic: about two hours

The schedule from the table above. Enough time for two full rounds, calm breaks and a relaxed finish without watching the clock.

With an infusion: about two and a half hours

Look at the infusion schedule beforehand and plan your arrival so that the first round is a calm one in a milder cabin and the second is the infusion. Then make the break afterwards especially long.

Important for all variations: if time gets tight, drop a round rather than the breaks.

Why the sauna after work fits so well

Between desk and sofa, many people lack a clear transition. The after-work sauna creates one: phone in the locker, work clothes on the hook, and for two hours there is only warmth, cold water and quiet. Many find exactly this break soothing, because the mind realises the working day is over.

There is also a practical advantage: a short visit is much easier to fit into the week than a whole day. If you reserve a fixed evening for it, you are more likely to stick with it. How individual visits become a habit is described in the article Going to the sauna regularly.

Early or late: the right time

  • Straight after work: right after office hours, many saunas are especially busy. If you can, go a little earlier or a little later.
  • Late evening: some facilities offer cheaper evening rates. Ask at your sauna whether they have something like this.
  • Keep sleep in mind: some people sleep particularly well after an evening sauna, others stay awake for a while. Try out which time suits you, and don't plan the last round right before bedtime.

Eating before the after-work sauna

After a long working day your stomach is often empty, yet nobody wants to go into the heat on a full stomach. A snack about an hour beforehand works well for many: a piece of fruit, a yoghurt, a handful of nuts. The proper meal comes afterwards at home – ideally something light that's quick to make, so the relaxed evening doesn't end in the kitchen. Also drink a glass of water on the way so you don't go into the first round thirsty.

The bag that is always ready

The most important trick for the sauna after work: the bag is already packed. Keep it in the car or at the office, then you can go straight there without a detour home. It's precisely this detour that often derails the plan – once you're sitting on the sofa, you don't get up again that quickly.

  • Two hammam towels: one for the bench, one for drying off. The Ocean hammam towel (approx. 180 × 100 cm) is flat-woven and takes up little space in the bag.
  • A light bathrobe: the Trimita Barok bathrobe made of 100 % Turkish cotton is light and dries quickly.
  • A small towel for your hair: the Mini Diamant hammam towel (approx. 90 × 45 cm, approx. 120 g) can be wrapped as a turban.
  • Shower gel and skincare: a shower gel, a face cream, a hand cream – that's all you need for two hours.
  • Bathing sandals, hair tie, water bottle and a bag for the wet things.

You will find more ideas for the perfect bag in the article Packing your sauna bag.

After a long day: slow down

If you arrive stressed from the office, you might want to "sweat out" the tension and head straight into the hottest cabin. It's better to arrive slowly: shower thoroughly first, sit and breathe for a few minutes, then do the first round calmly in a milder cabin or on a lower bench. Two calm rounds are better than three rushed ones.

If you come straight from sport, take a break first, have a drink and wait until your pulse has settled. If you have health questions, check with a doctor what is right for you.

The way home in winter

In the cold season, the journey home is part of the plan. Dry your hair thoroughly before you leave, or take a hat. Dress warmly and give yourself enough time to finish sweating so you don't go out into the cold sweaty. You can loosely roll up hammam towels and hang them up as soon as you get home – in our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries indoors in about 60 minutes.

Conclusion

An after-work sauna takes little time when the bag is ready. A snack beforehand, a calm arrival, two rounds with enough rest, drying off well and going home warm – that's how a working day turns into a relaxed evening. The key is to make the sauna after work a fixed part of your week.

Frequently asked questions

Is an after-work sauna worth it for just two rounds?

For many people, yes. It's not about the number but about really taking the time and not cutting the breaks short.

How long does an after-work sauna take?

With two rounds, breaks, showering and getting dressed, you should allow about two hours.

Can I go to the sauna straight after sport?

Take a break first, have a drink and wait until you feel calm again. Then start in a milder cabin.

How do I get the wet things home?

Hammam towels are thin and dry quickly. Roll them up loosely, put them in a bag and hang them up as soon as you get home.

Is the sauna after work too late for a good night's sleep?

That's individual. Many people sleep well afterwards; some stay awake for a while. Don't plan the last round right before bedtime and see what works for you.

How often can I go to an after-work sauna?

Once or twice a week is often mentioned. A fixed weekday helps you stick with it without having to plan anew every evening.
