How much shower gel do you really need?
Share
How much shower gel do you actually need for one shower? Most people simply squeeze a big dollop into their hand without thinking about it. Yet much less is often enough. If you dose consciously, a bottle lasts longer, you save money and less product goes down the drain unused. In this article we calculate how long a 200 ml bottle lasts, what affects the amount and how you can easily find out how much you need yourself.

How much shower gel is enough for one shower?
As a guide: for the whole body, an amount about the size of a hazelnut or a one-euro coin is enough. That is roughly 3 to 5 ml. Lathered up with water in your hands, this portion spreads easily from your shoulders to your feet.
A big dollop, as many people take out of habit, quickly comes to 10 ml or more. You hardly notice the difference while showering – more foam does not mean cleaner. But you do notice it when the bottle is empty after three weeks.
What affects the amount
- Body size: Tall people naturally need a little more than a child.
- Tools: With a washing mitt or shower sponge, shower gel lathers more, and you need less than with bare hands.
- Water hardness: In very hard water, many shower gels lather a little less. That tempts you to use more, even though the cleansing still works.
- Occasion: After sport, after a day at the beach with sunscreen or after the last sauna round, a little more is fine compared with a quick morning shower.
How long a 200 ml bottle lasts
A simple calculation shows how strongly the amount of shower gel per shower determines consumption. It is based on a 200 ml bottle like our VEGAN FOX shower gel for €4.99 and a daily shower.
| Amount per shower | Showers per bottle | Lasts with daily showers | Cost per shower |
|---|---|---|---|
| approx. 10 ml (big dollop) | approx. 20 | just under 3 weeks | approx. 25 cents |
| approx. 5 ml (teaspoon) | approx. 40 | just under 6 weeks | approx. 12 cents |
| approx. 3 ml (hazelnut-sized) | approx. 66 | a good 2 months | approx. 8 cents |
This is a calculation, not a measurement – how much actually ends up in your hand depends on the bottle, habit and the day. But the trend is clear: anyone who uses a hazelnut-sized portion instead of a big dollop makes the same bottle last more than three times as long.
And in a family household?
In a household of several people, consumption adds up quickly. If three people shower daily with 5 ml each, 15 ml a day come out of the bottle – a 200 ml bottle is then empty after just under two weeks. With 10 ml each, it is used up after about a week. If you shop for the whole family, you notice the difference not only in the bathroom but also in your shopping trolley. Here it is particularly worthwhile to take a closer look at the amount of shower gel together – for example with the teaspoon test in the next section. Children and teenagers in particular often dose generously because lots of foam is more fun.
Find out for yourself: the teaspoon test
If you want to know how much shower gel you really use, a little test helps:
- Measure once: Squeeze your usual amount onto a teaspoon. A level teaspoon is about 5 ml.
- Halve it: In your next shower, deliberately use half and see whether you notice a difference.
- Mark it: Make a small line on the bottle with a waterproof pen and check after a week how much has been used.
- Adjust: If you feel clean with the smaller amount, stick with it. If something is missing, go back up in small steps.
Dosing shower gel correctly: how less is enough
With a few simple tricks you get more out of a small amount:
- Wet your skin first: Shower gel spreads much better on damp skin. According to the directions for our shower gel, you apply it to damp skin, massage it in gently and lather it up.
- Lather it in your hands: Rub it between your palms with a little water before putting it on your body. This creates more foam from less product.
- Washing mitt or sponge: The texture helps with lathering.
- Wash selectively: A common recommendation is to use shower gel mainly where sweat and odour develop – such as the armpits and feet. On arms and legs, the foam that runs down anyway is often enough.
- Don't wash twice: Lathering up and rinsing off thoroughly once is enough.

When you need a little more
Not every shower is the same. In some situations a larger amount of shower gel makes sense:
- After sport: Lots of sweat, often deodorant residue too.
- After a day at the beach: Sunscreen, sand and salt water need to be washed off thoroughly.
- After the sauna: Many people shower with shower gel after the last round to wash off sweat. Between rounds, clear water is usually enough. More on this in the article Showering before and after the sauna.
- After gardening or DIY: When soil and dust stick to your skin.
Saving shower gel without going without
A few simple tricks help you really empty the bottle:
- Store it upside down: When the bottle is almost empty, the rest collects at the cap.
- Do not dilute in advance: Stretching shower gel with water is tempting. However, a diluted product can spoil faster because the formula changes. If at all, only add a splash of water in your hand for the current shower.
- Decant for children: Children like to squeeze generously. A small pump dispenser with a fixed amount helps.
- Refill a travel size: For the gym or sauna, a small refillable bottle is enough – then the full bottle does not have to come along every time.

Conclusion
You need less shower gel than you probably think: a hazelnut- to teaspoon-sized amount of about 3 to 5 ml is enough for the whole body. Wet your skin first, lather in your hands and wash selectively – then a 200 ml bottle lasts around six weeks or longer with daily showers. After sport, the beach or the sauna, a little more is fine.
Frequently asked questions
How much shower gel do you need per shower?
As a guide, about 3 to 5 ml, i.e. a hazelnut- to teaspoon-sized amount. With a washing mitt or sponge, even less is often enough.
How long does a 200 ml bottle of shower gel last?
With daily showers and 5 ml per shower just under six weeks, with a hazelnut-sized amount a good two months.
Does more foam mean cleaner?
No. Foam is mainly created by water and movement. A small, well-lathered amount cleans just as well.
How long does an opened shower gel keep?
The PAO symbol on the bottle tells you – an open jar with a number of months. More on this in the article Cosmetics shelf life and the PAO symbol.
Do I need shower gel between sauna rounds?
Usually not. It is customary to shower thoroughly before the first round; between rounds clear water is enough. After the last round, many people use shower gel again.
