Tagescreme oder Nachtcreme: VEGAN FOX Pflegeset mit Gesichtscreme für morgens und abends

Day cream or night cream: do you really need both?

Day cream or night cream – or both? In the drugstore, the jars usually stand side by side in pairs, and it is easy to get the impression that a complete skincare routine has to include two products. That is not quite true. In this article we look at how day and night care typically differ, when two products really make sense and when a single face cream for morning and evening is perfectly sufficient.

Day cream or night cream: where does the split come from?

Your skin does not have a clock that switches to “night mode” at 10 pm and suddenly demands a different product. The division into day and night is mainly practical: during the day, your face is exposed to sun, wind, heated air and often make-up. At night nothing sits on top, nobody sees a slight shine, and the cream has hours to absorb.

These different conditions lead to different requirements for texture, sun protection and ingredients. Manufacturers turned this into two product categories. That makes sense when the two creams really are different – and less sense when essentially the same formula is sold in two different packages.

The typical differences at a glance

Feature Day care Night care
Texture Usually lighter, absorbs quickly Often richer, may stay on the skin longer
Sun protection Often with SPF, but by no means always No SPF, not needed
Under make-up Designed for it Not relevant
Ingredients Often focused on moisture and protection from environmental factors Often with active ingredients considered light-sensitive
Shine As little as possible Acceptable

Sun protection: the most important difference

The only truly hard difference is sun protection. Many day creams contain a UV filter; a night cream does not need one. Keep in mind: an SPF in a cream only protects as well as the amount applied allows. Most people use far less face cream than would be needed for the stated protection factor. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in summer, a separate sunscreen as the last step is usually the better choice.

Texture and richness

During the day a cream should absorb quickly, not shine and not make your make-up slide. In the evening none of that matters. That is why night creams are often richer, with a higher share of oils and lipids. For very dry skin this can feel pleasant, for oily skin it may be too much.

Active ingredients

Some active ingredients are considered light-sensitive or make the skin more sensitive to sun. They are therefore mostly used in evening products. If your skincare contains such ingredients, check the directions for use. With a simple moisturiser without such additives, there is nothing against using it around the clock.

When two creams make sense

There are good reasons for two separate products. Typical situations:

  • You want a day cream with SPF: For office days with little sun, a cream with UV protection can be practical; in the evening you do not need the filter.
  • Your skin is drier in the evening: If your skin feels tight after a day in heated air, a richer product in the evening can feel good.
  • You wear make-up every day: Then your morning care should be light and absorb quickly.
  • You use targeted active skincare: Products that the manufacturer says should only be used in the evening belong in your evening routine.

When one face cream for morning and evening is enough

For many people, a single, well-tolerated face cream is the simpler solution. This is especially true if your skin is neither very dry nor very oily, if you do not wear make-up or if you prefer to keep your routine simple. In the sauna bag or the toiletry bag on holiday, one product less is always an advantage.

Our VEGAN FOX face cream with almond and avocado oil (50 ml, €17.90) is designed exactly for this: according to the directions, you apply a small amount to the cleansed skin of your face and neck in the morning and evening. Almond oil and avocado oil give the skin a supple feel, chamomile and panthenol complete the formula. It is vegan and should be stored at 15–25 °C. You can read more about the two oils in our article Almond oil and avocado oil in face cream.

Important: the face cream does not contain a UV filter. If you use it in the morning and spend time in the sun, add a sunscreen as the last step.

How to find out what your skin needs

Instead of going by product names, take an honest look at your skin. A simple two-week test:

  1. One cream for both: Use the same product in a small amount morning and evening.
  2. Observe in the morning: Does your skin feel comfortable when you wake up, or does it feel tight?
  3. Observe at midday: Is your forehead very shiny, or is your make-up not sitting well? Then the morning amount may have been too much.
  4. Adjust: If your skin feels tight in the morning, use a little more in the evening. If it shines during the day, use less in the morning.

Often it is enough to vary the amount depending on the time of day instead of buying a second product. Only if that does not help is a richer evening product worth a try. The season matters too – what is enough in summer can feel too light in January. More on this in the article Facial care in winter.

Three example routines

Routine Morning Evening
Minimal Cleanse, face cream Cleanse, face cream
With sun protection Cleanse, face cream, sunscreen Cleanse, face cream
With weekly ritual Cleanse, face cream, sunscreen if needed 1–2 times a week: cleanse, face peel, face cream

For cleansing, VEGAN FOX offers two versions: the cleansing foam for normal skin with chamomile and the cleansing foam for dry skin with aloe vera, lactic acid and niacinamide. According to the directions, both are meant for morning and evening use.

The face peel with 2.5 % lactic acid is a gel without abrasive particles and, according to the manufacturer, is used 1–2 times a week. It is not suitable for very sensitive skin and should not be used directly before or during the sauna – better plan it for a quiet evening.

And on sauna days?

After the last sauna round, the same order as at home in the evening is recommended: cleanse gently, pat dry and let your skin cool down before applying cream. Whether you use a day or an evening product is secondary. How to plan skincare around the sauna is explained in the article Skincare before, during and after the sauna. And how best to spread the cream is covered in How to apply face cream properly.

Conclusion

Day cream or night cream is less a necessity than a question of your habits. Two products are worthwhile if you want an SPF in your day care, have noticeably drier skin in the evening or use active ingredients that should only be applied at night. For everyone else, one well-tolerated face cream for morning and evening plus sunscreen when needed is a complete and simple routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a night cream in the morning?

Generally yes, as long as the directions do not say otherwise. However, a rich evening product may shine during the day or hold less well under make-up. If it contains active ingredients that should only be used in the evening, follow that instruction.

Can I use a day cream at night?

Yes. A UV filter in the cream is unnecessary at night but usually does no harm. People with very dry skin may find it a little too light in the evening.

Is a day cream with SPF enough as sun protection?

For short trips in everyday life it may be. Because people usually apply less face cream than the stated protection factor requires, a separate sunscreen is the safer choice for longer periods in the sun.

At what age do I need a night cream?

There is no fixed age. What matters is whether your skin feels drier in the evening. If not, your usual care is fine in the evening too.

How long does an opened face cream keep?

The PAO symbol on the packaging tells you – an open jar with a number of months. More on this in the article Cosmetics shelf life and the PAO symbol.
