A brief history of Mother's Day
The idea comes from the USA: Anna Jarvis campaigned for a day honouring mothers at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1914 the second Sunday in May officially became Mother’s Day there. In Germany, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1923, heavily promoted by the association of florists – which is why it is still so closely linked to a bouquet of flowers. Incidentally, Anna Jarvis herself later sharply criticised the growing commercialisation. For her, it was about appreciation and time together, not about the biggest possible gifts. A good thought to keep in mind when you choose something for Mother's Day.
Think first: how does your mother relax?
The most expensive gift is not automatically the best. A bathrobe for the sauna is of little use if she never goes to the sauna. And a care set stays in the cupboard if she has not changed her favourite cream in years. Before you choose something, three short questions are worth asking:
