Buying a bathing poncho: the 6 criteria that really matter
Many guides list a dozen features. In practice, six points decide whether you will be happy with your poncho.
1. Length and width instead of S, M, L
Size labels are not standardised for ponchos. Always look at the dimensions (height × width) and the manufacturer's recommended body height. If a poncho is too short, it rides up while you change. When in doubt: longer and wider is better.
2. Material to match the use
Cotton terry is warm and highly absorbent, but heavy. AirLite (95 % cotton, 5 % recycled polyester) is considerably lighter. Waffle piqué is the lightest and packs small. There is no "best" material, only the right one for your use.
3. Weight
Our models range from approx. 700 g to approx. 1,400 g. If you drive to the lake, it does not matter. In a backpack, on a bike or in hand luggage, you will notice every difference.
4. Hood
For wet hair on cool days, a hood is the most important detail. All six Wave Hawaii models have one, five of them double-layered with collar and drawstring according to the descriptions.
5. Pockets
For keys, lip balm or cold hands. Check whether the manufacturer mentions pockets, because not every model has them.
6. Verified details
Reputable sellers state the material in percent, dimensions, weight and care instructions. If these details are missing, that is a warning sign. Certificates such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 should be stated specifically for the product, not just generally for the shop.

Which bathing poncho to buy? Recommendations by use
The table shows the data, but the decision depends on what you use the poncho for most often. Our recommendations:
| Your use | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sauna and spa | FARO or AIR | cotton terry, warm in the sauna garden, hood for wet hair |
| Travel, hand luggage, van life | PAMPATAR | approx. 700 g, rolls into its hood, can also be used as a travel pillow |
| Water sports, changeable weather | CUMBUCO | approx. 850 g, according to the manufacturer warming when cool and airier when warm |
| Smaller people | PENICHE | size S for approx. 151–173 cm, light, with pockets |
| Tall people, plenty of freedom of movement | MOVE | size L for approx. 165–195 cm, circumference approx. 160 cm |
| One poncho for everything, small budget | PAMPATAR or AIR | cheapest model or unisex terry all-rounder |
Honest pros and cons of the model groups
Terry models (AIR, FARO, MOVE)
Pro: very soft, absorb a lot of moisture, warmest. According to the manufacturer, AIR and MOVE are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Con: at approx. 1.3–1.4 kg heavy and bulky, dry more slowly when wet. Rather impractical for flights with hand luggage.
AirLite models (PENICHE, CUMBUCO)
Pro: around 500 g lighter than the terry models, made for changing temperatures according to the manufacturer. Con: the most expensive models in the comparison, each available in only one size, and a small share of polyester – if you want pure cotton, choose another model.
Waffle piqué (PAMPATAR)
Pro: lightest, smallest pack size, lowest price, two sizes. Con: less fluffy and less warm than terry. For long breaks in a cold sauna garden it is more of a second choice.
Buying a bathing poncho online: how to avoid mistakes
When buying online you cannot touch the fabric. These steps help you choose correctly anyway:
- Check your height: Is your height within the manufacturer's recommendation? At the upper end, go for the larger model.
- Measure for comparison: Lay one of your own ponchos, a jumper or a towel flat and measure height and width. This gives you a feel for 90, 100 or 105 cm length.
- Put the weight in context: 1.4 kg is roughly as much as a full 1.5-litre water bottle. Consider whether you want to carry that regularly.
- Check the material in percent: "cotton look" or "cotton-like" is not a material specification.
- Read the care instructions: Can the poncho go in the tumble dryer? For our models yes, according to the manufacturer.

What a bathing poncho costs
Simple ponchos made of microfibre or thin cotton are available for little money, branded models made of dense cotton usually cost considerably more, and lined changing robes even more. If you want to buy a bathing poncho from us, the Wave Hawaii models cost between €54.90 and €73.90. The price difference is mainly explained by material and weight, not by the basic function: they can all help you change, dry off and warm up. If you use the poncho often, it is best to calculate per use. A model you take to the sauna or the lake every week quickly works out cheaper than a cheap poncho that soon no longer fits or feels scratchy.
If you also need a towel for a lounger or the beach, a light Ocean hammam towel is a good addition, because the poncho does not replace something to lie on.
When you should not buy a bathing poncho
Honest advice includes this too: not everyone needs a poncho. If you mainly lie on the beach and change in the beach facility's changing room, a large towel is enough. If you are looking for protection from rain and wind when winter swimming, a lined changing robe with a weatherproof outer layer is the better choice; we do not sell those. And if you are looking for something to wear in the sauna cabin, a poncho will not help, because it usually stays on the hook there. In all other cases – wherever you are wet, cold and have no changing room – it is worth buying a bathing poncho.

Conclusion
Before you buy a bathing poncho, clarify three things: where will you use it, how will you carry it there and how tall are you? For the sauna and cool days, FARO and AIR are the cosy choice, the light PAMPATAR is for travel, and the CUMBUCO for water sports and changeable weather. Smaller people go for the PENICHE, tall people for the MOVE. You can find all models in our bathing ponchos collection.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look for when buying a bathing poncho?
Sufficient length and width, the right material for your use, the weight, a hood and specific manufacturer details on material, dimensions and care.
Where can I buy a bathing poncho?
In sports and surf shops, department stores and online. Especially online, look for complete details on dimensions, material and weight. You can find all Wave Hawaii models in our bathing ponchos collection.
Which bathing poncho is the best?
There is no universal test winner. For the sauna a terry model such as FARO or AIR suits best, the PAMPATAR for travel and the CUMBUCO for water sports.
Which size should I choose?
Go by the manufacturer's recommended body height. If you are on the border, choose the larger model so the poncho does not ride up while you change.
Is an expensive bathing poncho worth the money?
If you use it regularly, yes. What counts is material, workmanship and verified details, not the price alone.
Is an OEKO-TEX certified poncho worth it?
If you value tested textiles, you will find AIR and MOVE with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 according to the manufacturer in our shop.
