Bathing poncho or towel? The honest comparison for lake, beach and sauna
Share
Bathing poncho or towel – many people who swim regularly, head to the lake or go to the sauna face this question. Both dry you off, but they solve different problems: the towel is flexible and light, the poncho makes changing easy and keeps you warm. In this comparison we go through the key criteria, show typical situations in a table and explain when it pays to combine both.

The basic difference
A towel is a flat piece of fabric: you can dry yourself with it, lie on it, wrap it around you or hold it up as a privacy screen. A bathing poncho is a garment: you pull it over your head, your hands are free, and you can change underneath the wide cut. Almost all the pros and cons follow from this.
- Towel: versatile, lighter, cheaper, but when changing you usually need a second hand or a cabin.
- Bathing poncho: portable changing room and warm layer in one, but heavier and only meant to be worn, not to lie on.
Bathing poncho or towel: the criteria compared
Drying off
With a towel you dry yourself in a targeted way – back, legs, hair. A poncho absorbs moisture more passively while you wear it. For your hair a towel is usually more practical; the poncho's hood helps more against getting cold than with rubbing your hair dry. If you want to be thoroughly dry, use the towel first and then pull on the poncho.
Changing
This is where the poncho really shines. The manufacturer explicitly describes our Wave Hawaii models as a portable changing room: pull it on, swap your swimwear for dry clothes underneath, done. It also works with a towel, but it takes practice – it slips when you need both hands. How it still works with a large towel is explained in our article on changing at the beach.
Warmth
After swimming you cool down quickly in wind and air. A poncho covers your upper body and arms and, with the hood, your head and neck too. A wrapped towel usually leaves shoulders and arms bare. On cool days, in spring or autumn, the poncho therefore has a clear advantage.
Weight and pack size
This is where the towel wins. Our hammam towel Ocean (approx. 180 × 100 cm) weighs approx. 400 g. Depending on the model, the Wave Hawaii ponchos weigh between approx. 700 g (PAMPATAR) and approx. 1,400 g (MOVE). For a backpack or hand luggage, a flat-woven towel is much more compact.
Drying time
Thin, flat-woven towels dry faster than dense terry. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in about 30 minutes in the sun and about 60 minutes indoors. A thick cotton poncho usually takes considerably longer. If you go into the water several times a day, plan for that.
Versatility
A large towel is a lounger cover, sun protection, blanket and privacy screen all at once. A poncho mainly does one thing: it is worn. But it does that very well.
Hygiene and care
Both should be aired after use rather than left damp in your bag. A towel simply goes in with your other washing and takes up little space in the machine and on the line. A poncho is bulkier; on the other hand, according to the manufacturer all our Wave Hawaii models are machine washable and tumble-dryer safe. Hammam towels, by contrast, should be air-dried and washed without fabric softener. If you have no dryer and little space to hang things, the thin towel gets you back to a dry textile faster.
Privacy
If you do not like changing in front of others, you will feel much more comfortable in a poncho: it does not slip, and nobody has to hold a towel for you. With a towel, on the other hand, you can give others a privacy screen, such as children or your partner – a poncho cannot do that.
Price
A large hammam towel costs from €21.90 in our shop (ADRIA), the Ocean costs €29.90. The ponchos range from €54.90 to €73.90. So the poncho is more of an addition than a replacement for a budget towel.

In the sauna: bathing poncho and towel have different jobs
In the sauna, the question "bathing poncho or towel" does not really arise. In the cabin a towel usually goes under your whole body so that no sweat gets onto the wood – no poncho can do that. The poncho comes into play afterwards: on the way outside, in the sauna garden, during your break. There it rather replaces the bathrobe. We have written up how poncho and bathrobe differ in a separate comparison.
The combination: bathing poncho plus towel
For many people the best answer is not either-or but both – in the right weight class. A proven combination for lake and beach:
- A large, light towel for lying on and drying off, for example a hammam towel Ocean measuring approx. 180 × 100 cm.
- A poncho for changing and keeping warm after swimming.
- A small towel for hair or face if you have long hair.
If you need to save weight, take a light poncho: the Travel Poncho PAMPATAR made of waffle piqué weighs approx. 700 g and, according to the manufacturer, rolls into its hood and doubles as a travel pillow. If you like it warmer, choose a classic cotton poncho such as the bathing poncho AIR (approx. 1,300 g, unisex cut, large front pocket).
Decision guide in three questions
If you are still unsure whether a bathing poncho or a towel suits you better, answer these three questions honestly:
- Do you often change without a cabin? Then a poncho is worth it.
- Does every gram in your luggage count? Then a large, light towel is enough – or a light poncho as an addition.
- Do you get cold quickly after swimming? Then a poncho with a hood is the better choice.
If two of the three answers point to the poncho, it is a sensible purchase for you. Otherwise, a good towel remains the simpler solution.

Conclusion
Bathing poncho or towel is not a matter of belief but of the situation. The towel is lighter, cheaper, dries faster and can also be used to lie on. The poncho makes changing without a cabin easy and keeps you warm after swimming. If you spend a lot of time outdoors by the water, you are best off with both: a large, light towel plus a poncho in the right weight class.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bathing poncho replace a towel?
For drying off and changing, largely yes. For lying down, for the sauna and for drying your hair, you still need a towel.
Is a bathing poncho heavier than a towel?
Usually yes. Our ponchos weigh approx. 700 to 1,400 g, a hammam towel Ocean approx. 400 g.
Can I use a poncho in the sauna?
Not in the cabin – a towel belongs under your body there. After a sauna session, in the sauna garden or during a break, however, the poncho is very practical.
What dries faster, poncho or towel?
As a rule, a thin, flat-woven towel. Dense cotton ponchos take longer because more material absorbs water.
Is a poncho only worth it for surfers?
No. It is practical for anyone who wants to change or keep warm outdoors at the lake, on the beach, at the campsite or after the sauna.
