Bathrobe or bathing poncho: which suits your sauna day better?
Share
Bathrobe or bathing poncho? Both keep you warm, and you take both to the sauna, the lake or on holiday. Yet they are made for quite different moments. One is the classic for the relaxation room, the thermal spa and the sofa, the other a mobile changing room for the beach, the lake and the campsite. In this comparison we show you the differences in design, weight, size and care – with real values from our product data – and which situation each one suits.

The basic difference
A bathrobe is open at the front, has sleeves and is closed with a tie belt. It sits relatively close to the body, your arms are free and you can move in it like in a coat. You usually put it on when you are already mostly dry.
A bathing poncho is a wide cover-up with a head opening, usually with a hood and without a belt. It hangs loosely around you and is mostly made of absorbent material. That is exactly what makes it a mobile changing room: under the poncho you can dry yourself and swap wet swimwear for dry clothes without anyone seeing anything.
In short: the bathrobe is made for wearing and relaxing, the bathing poncho for drying off and changing.
Bathrobe or bathing poncho: the comparison in numbers
The following table shows weights and sizes from the product descriptions of our models. You can see that there are light and heavy versions of both the bathrobe and the bathing poncho.
| Model | Type | Material | Weight approx. | Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trimita Barok | Bathrobe | 100 % cotton, light | 500 g | S/M, L/XL |
| DOTWAVE | Bathrobe with hood | 100 % cotton, textured | 1.6–1.7 kg | S to XXL |
| Travel Poncho PAMPATAR | Bathing poncho | 100 % cotton, waffle piqué | 700 g | S/M, L/XL |
| AirLite PENICHE / CUMBUCO | Bathing poncho | 95 % cotton, 5 % recycled polyester | 850 g | S or M |
| Poncho AIR | Bathing poncho | 100 % cotton terry | 1,300 g | M |
| Bathing poncho MOVE | Bathing poncho | 100 % cotton | 1,400 g | L |
What this shows: a light cotton bathrobe is no heavier than a light poncho. Classic terry ponchos, on the other hand, weigh well over a kilo – similar to a warm bathrobe.
When the bathrobe is the better choice
Relaxation room, thermal spa and spa
In the sauna relaxation room, at the thermal spa or in a spa hotel, the bathrobe is the classic. It sits closer to the body, is closed with the belt and leaves your arms free – for reading, for a cup of tea or on the way to the next sauna session. With pockets you also have room for keys or glasses.
At home
Coffee in the morning, after a bath in the evening, on the sofa: this is where the bathrobe plays to its strengths. A poncho is usually too bulky for this, because it hangs loosely around you without a belt.
Sitting and moving around for longer
If you stay in your robe for longer, sit down, get up and walk around, sleeves and a belt serve you better. The poncho is not made for that. In these moments, the answer to bathrobe or bathing poncho is clear.
For the sauna we recommend light models such as the Trimita Barok bathrobe or the Trimita women's bathrobe with hood made of three-layer muslin. Why light is often better than heavy here is explained in the article Bathrobe for the sauna: light or heavy?
When the bathing poncho is the better choice
No changing room: beach, lake, lido lawn
Wherever there is no changing cubicle, the poncho is hard to beat. You slip it on after swimming, dry yourself underneath and swap your swimming trunks or bikini for dry clothes. According to the manufacturer, the Poncho AIR is designed for exactly this: a generous unisex cut, a double-layer hood with a high collar and drawstring, and a large front pocket.
Water sports and cold dips
After surfing, SUP or a cool swim in the lake, the hood keeps your head and neck warm while you are still wet. A bathrobe would quickly get soaked in this situation and stick to your skin.
Camping and travel
When travelling and camping, pack size matters, and in the bathrobe-versus-poncho contest the poncho usually wins here, because it also replaces the towel and the changing room. The Travel Poncho PAMPATAR weighs approx. 700 g and, according to the manufacturer, can be rolled into its own hood – and even used as a travel pillow on the road. The AirLite models such as the AirLite Poncho PENICHE sit between travel and terry ponchos at approx. 850 g.
Size: two different systems
With a bathrobe, you go by clothing size and length. With a poncho, body height is what counts, because it does not fit closely. The manufacturers therefore state body height ranges: the FARO poncho (size M, approx. 100 × 75 cm) is intended for about 161–183 cm, the MOVE (size L, approx. 105 × 80 cm) for about 165–195 cm. If you want plenty of room to change, choose one size larger. So if you use both a bathrobe and a bathing poncho, you will not necessarily need the same size label for both.
Care and drying
A practical difference that is often overlooked: according to the manufacturer, our Wave Hawaii ponchos are machine washable and suitable for the tumble dryer. The light Trimita Barok bathrobe, on the other hand, should not go in the dryer, but dries quickly in the air. Heavy terry ponchos and dense bathrobes take considerably longer on the line. If you want to wash your bathrobe and bathing poncho together after a day at the water, it is worth taking a quick look at both labels.
Bathrobe or bathing poncho for the sauna?
In the sauna cabin itself you wear neither – there you lie on your towel. For the time in between: in the relaxation room and at the thermal spa, the bathrobe is customary and more practical. If the sauna has an outdoor area with a plunge pool or natural pond, a poncho is pleasant for the walk back because it dries you straight away. Whether ponchos are welcome in the relaxation room is up to each facility. If in doubt, simply ask at reception.
Our tip: combine both
If you spend a lot of time outdoors by the water and like to use the sauna, you are best off with both: the poncho for the beach, the lake and getting out of the water, the light bathrobe for the relaxation room, the thermal spa and the evening. Light versions like the Barok and the PAMPATAR fit well into one bag together. You will find all ponchos in the ponchos collection.

Conclusion
Bathrobe or bathing poncho is not a question of better or worse, but of use. The bathrobe is your companion for the relaxation room, the thermal spa and home: sleeves, belt, pockets, easy to move in. The bathing poncho is the better choice at the lake, on the beach, for water sports and anywhere you want to change without a changing room. In terms of weight, there are light and heavy models on both sides. You will find all bathrobes in the bathrobes collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bathrobe and a bathing poncho?
The bathrobe is open at the front and has sleeves and a belt. The bathing poncho is pulled over the head, hangs wide around you and is mainly used for drying off and changing.
Can I change under a bathrobe?
Only to a limited extent, because it is open at the front and fits closely. It is much easier under a poncho – that is what it is made for.
Which is lighter to take along?
That depends on the model. A light cotton bathrobe weighs about 500 g, a travel poncho about 700 g. Classic terry ponchos and warm bathrobes weigh more than a kilo.
Does a bathing poncho replace a towel?
For drying off, yes. You will still need a towel to lie on on the sauna bench, for example a hammam towel from the hammam towels collection.
Can a bathing poncho go in the tumble dryer?
According to the manufacturer, our Wave Hawaii ponchos are suitable for the tumble dryer. Still, always check the care label of the specific model.
