Bathing poncho for men: cut, size and use
Share
Anyone looking for a bathing poncho for men soon discovers that genuine men's ponchos hardly exist. Most models have a unisex cut. For men, the label therefore matters less than three concrete points: enough length, enough width across the shoulders and a use that suits the material. In this guide we show which of our Wave Hawaii ponchos work well for men, what to look for in the cut and which model suits which type.

Is there such a thing as a bathing poncho specifically for men?
At its core, a poncho is a large piece of fabric with a head opening and a hood. A close-fitting cut like that of shirts or jackets plays no role. This is why manufacturers usually differentiate by size, not by gender. For the Poncho AIR, Wave Hawaii says so explicitly: a generous unisex cut with plenty of freedom of movement for women and men. For the other models there is no gender information – they are worn by men and women alike.
For you, this means: do not search for “men's”, but for the size that suits your height and build.
Bathing poncho for men: what matters in the cut
Shoulder width and arm room
On average, men have broader shoulders. When changing under the poncho, you pull your arms inside to swap swim shorts and shirt. If the poncho is too narrow, it quickly gets tight. A greater width or a large circumference makes the difference. For the MOVE, the manufacturer states a circumference of approx. 160 cm.
Length
A poncho that ends just above the hips when you are 1.85 m tall misses its purpose. Pay attention to the recommended body height and make sure you are not at the upper end of the range.
Hood
A hood should be big enough to put on comfortably. Our terry models have a two-layer hood with a high collar and drawstring – handy in the wind after surfing or in the sauna garden.
Pockets
Car key, locker key, phone: if you are out and about a lot, you need pockets. The FARO and MOVE have two side pockets, the AIR one large front pocket, the PENICHE two roomy pockets and the PAMPATAR two side pockets.
Bathing poncho for men: the suitable models
Most adult men are roughly between 170 and 190 cm tall. For this range, these models come into question:
| Model | Size / dimensions | Body height | Material / weight | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MOVE | L / approx. 105 × 80 cm, circumference approx. 160 cm | approx. 165–195 cm | 100% cotton, approx. 1,400 g | tall and broad men, cold days |
| FARO | M / approx. 100 × 75 cm | approx. 161–183 cm | cotton terry, approx. 1,350 g | sauna, thermal baths, beach |
| AIR | M / approx. 95 × 75 cm | approx. 161–183 cm | cotton terry, approx. 1,300 g | beach, surfing, sauna; explicitly unisex |
| CUMBUCO | M / approx. 100 × 75 cm | approx. 161–183 cm | AirLite, approx. 850 g | camping, travel, changeable weather |
| PAMPATAR | L/XL / approx. 105 × 80 cm | not stated | waffle piqué, approx. 700 g | backpacking, van life, hand luggage |
With a recommendation of up to approx. 173 cm, the PENICHE is too short for most men. You can find the complete overview of all dimensions in our guide to bathing poncho sizes.
Which bathing poncho for men suits you? Three types
Tall or broad-shouldered: MOVE
From around 183 cm or with a broad back, the MOVE in size L is the obvious choice. According to the manufacturer it has a long cut, offers a circumference of approx. 160 cm and covers body heights up to approx. 195 cm. The price for this is a weight of approx. 1,400 g.
The all-rounder for sauna and beach: FARO or AIR
If you are between approx. 170 and 180 cm and want a classic, fluffy terry poncho, the FARO and AIR are the candidates. The FARO has two side pockets and, according to the description, is made in Portugal. The AIR has a large front pocket, is explicitly unisex and, according to the manufacturer, is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.
The traveller: PAMPATAR or CUMBUCO
If you travel with a rucksack, surfboard or van, weight matters. The PAMPATAR in L/XL weighs approx. 700 g and rolls up into its hood. The CUMBUCO made of AirLite sits in between at approx. 850 g and, according to the manufacturer, is designed for changing temperatures.
Bathing poncho for men in everyday life: typical uses
- Surfing and water sports: change at the spot after your session without juggling a towel. The AIR explicitly mentions surfing as a use.
- Sauna: between sessions in the sauna garden and on the way to the relaxation room. The poncho does not belong in the cabin.
- Outdoor pool and swimming lake: change on the lawn when the changing room is full.
- Camping: on the way to the shower and back, and as a warm layer in the morning and evening.
- After outdoor sport: to dry off and change at the car.
Bathing poncho for men or bathrobe?
Many men already own a bathrobe and wonder whether they need a poncho. The difference lies in how it is used: a bathrobe is opened and tied, a poncho is pulled over your head. It cannot come open and is therefore more practical for changing outdoors. At home or in a thermal spa, a bathrobe is often more comfortable. You can find the detailed comparison linked below.
What 700 g or 1,400 g mean in everyday life
Weight sounds abstract on paper. In practice you notice it in two places: in your bag and after swimming. A terry poncho weighing approx. 1,400 g quickly fills half a sports bag and becomes considerably heavier when wet. If you cycle to the lake or take the poncho in your rucksack on a hike, you will feel it. A travel poncho weighing approx. 700 g, on the other hand, takes up hardly any space but keeps you less warm. So think before buying about whether you will mostly carry the poncho in the car or on your own back.
Common mistakes with a bathing poncho for men
- Buying too small: if you choose size M at 182 cm, you are at the upper end of the range. The poncho will then be short.
- Only looking at appearance: weight and material determine everyday use more than colour.
- Forgetting the pockets: without a pocket, your car key ends up in the sand.

Conclusion

For tall or broad men, the MOVE in L is the first choice; for classic use in the sauna and on the beach, the FARO and AIR; for travelling, the PAMPATAR in L/XL or the CUMBUCO. You can find all models in our poncho collection.
