Badeponcho für Damen und Herren: Mann im Unisex-Poncho Wave Hawaii AIR in Türkis und Hellblau am Strand

Bathing poncho for women: cut, length and use

A bathing poncho for women should above all do one thing: cover you reliably while you change, without you having to fight with a slipping towel. Whether on the beach, at the outdoor pool or after the sauna – the right length, a hood that long hair fits into and a weight that suits your bag make all the difference in everyday use. In this guide we show what women should look for in cut and length, which of our Wave Hawaii models suit which height and how changing under the poncho goes smoothly.

Are there special bathing ponchos for women?

Most bathing ponchos are unisex. Wave Hawaii explicitly describes the Poncho AIR as a unisex cut for women and men; the other models carry no gender information. For women, one point is still particularly important: many are shorter than 170 cm, and some unisex ponchos turn out rather long for them. That is why it is worth looking at a model in size S.

In our range, this is the AirLite Poncho PENICHE at approx. 90 × 70 cm, recommended for body heights of approx. 151 to 173 cm. It has two roomy pockets and a two-layer hood with collar and drawstring.

Bathing poncho for women: the right length

When you change out of a bikini or swimsuit, you bend down, lift one leg and put on clothes. To stay covered while doing so, the poncho should reach at least to mid-thigh, ideally to just above the knee. Too long is not ideal either: a poncho that hangs below the knees gets in the way when walking and becomes heavy more quickly when wet.

As a rule of thumb: if you are in the middle of a model's height range, the length usually fits well. At the upper end it gets shorter, at the lower end longer.

You can find the complete dimensions of all models in our guide to bathing poncho sizes.

Hood and long hair

If you have long hair, you know the problem: after swimming it drips down your neck, and a small hood can hardly be pulled over a wet ponytail. For the PENICHE, CUMBUCO, FARO, MOVE and AIR, the hood has two layers according to the descriptions; for the FARO, MOVE and AIR, the manufacturer also mentions a high collar. You can adjust the opening with the drawstring.

A practical tip: first squeeze your hair out with a small towel or wrap it briefly before putting the hood up. That way the hood stays pleasantly dry for longer. What else a hood does is explained in our guide to the bathing poncho with hood, which you will find below.

The right bathing poncho for women: four models

For petite women: PENICHE

Size S, approx. 90 × 70 cm, approx. 850 g, two pockets. The AirLite material consists of 95% cotton and 5% recycled polyester and is lighter than terry – handy when your beach bag is already full.

For the classic terry version: AIR or FARO

Both in size M for approx. 161 to 183 cm, both made of 100% cotton. The AIR has a large front pocket and, according to the manufacturer, is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100; the FARO has two side pockets and, according to the description, is made in Portugal.

For travelling: PAMPATAR in S/M

At approx. 700 g the lightest poncho, in S/M approx. 95 × 75 cm. It rolls up into its hood and, according to the manufacturer, can even be used as a travel pillow. There is no body height recommendation; the dimensions roughly match the AIR.

For tall women: MOVE

Size L, long cut, for approx. 165 to 195 cm. If you are tall and want plenty of coverage, this is the one – although at approx. 1,400 g it is the heaviest model.

How changing under the poncho works

Especially when switching from a bikini to underwear, a fixed order helps:

  1. Bottoms first: under the poncho, take off your bikini bottoms and put on underwear and trousers or a skirt.
  2. Then the top: pull your arms into the poncho, undo and remove your bikini top, put on a bra or top.
  3. Finally the shirt: either put it on under the poncho or take the poncho off and pull the shirt straight on.

Lay your clothes out in this order beforehand. Garments without lots of buttons and hooks make it easier.

Bathing poncho for women in the beach bag: weight and space

Alongside a towel, sun cream, water bottle and a change of clothes, there is often little room left in a beach bag. This is where the difference between materials becomes clear: a terry poncho weighing approx. 1,300 to 1,400 g is bulky and takes up a lot of space. The PENICHE at approx. 850 g and the PAMPATAR at approx. 700 g are lighter and can be packed more compactly. If you drive anyway, it hardly matters. If you walk or cycle, you notice every gram. A roomy beach bag from our bag collection creates extra space so that your poncho and change of clothes do not end up among wet things. Tip: pack a small pouch for your wet bikini.

Typical uses for women

  • Beach and swimming lake: change without a changing room, then wear it as a light layer against the wind.
  • Outdoor pool with children: if you are keeping an eye on children at the same time, a poncho keeps your hands free.
  • Sauna: between sessions in the sauna garden. The poncho does not belong in the cabin.
  • Travel and wellness weekends: a light poncho like the PENICHE or PAMPATAR takes up little space in your suitcase.

Bathing poncho for women or beach dress?

A beach dress or tunic looks stylish, but hardly absorbs water and is only partly suitable for changing. A bathing poncho, on the other hand, is made for drying off, keeping warm and changing. Many women use both: the poncho straight after the water, the dress for the walk to the café.

Petite women are well served by the PENICHE in size S; for the classic terry version, the AIR and FARO are good options; for travelling the PAMPATAR and for tall women the MOVE. You can find all models in our poncho collection.
