Bathing poncho for adults: what to look for
Share
If you search for a bathing poncho for adults, you surprisingly often end up with children's ponchos with animal ears and age ranges. No wonder: for a long time, bathing ponchos were considered a children's item for swimming lessons. Today, more and more adults use a poncho on the beach, at the outdoor pool, after the sauna or when surfing. Their requirements differ from those of children. In this guide we show what makes an adult poncho, how it differs from a children's poncho and what to look for when buying.

What distinguishes a bathing poncho for adults from a children's poncho?
At first glance they look similar: fabric, head opening, hood. In the detail, however, there are typical differences. The table shows common features – individual products may vary.
| Feature | Children's poncho (typical) | Bathing poncho for adults |
|---|---|---|
| Size information | by age or clothing size | by body height and dimensions in cm |
| Main purpose | drying off and keeping warm after swimming | drying off, keeping warm and changing under the poncho |
| Design | often motifs, animal ears on the hood | plain, stripes or colour blocks |
| Length | chosen so that nothing drags on the ground | usually to the thigh or knee |
| Pockets | often none | often side or front pocket |
| Weight | low, due to the small size | approx. 700 to 1,400 g depending on material |
The most important difference is the purpose: children are wrapped in the poncho after swimming. Adults want to change underneath it on their own. That requires more width and a reliable length.
The offers often differ in material, too. Children's ponchos are frequently made of terry, but also of muslin or microfibre, because they should be light and dry again quickly. For adult ponchos, keeping warm matters alongside drying off – for example in the wind on the beach or in the sauna garden. That is why you will more often find heavier terry qualities or blended fabrics here that are meant to stay pleasant in changing temperatures.
What adults should look for in a bathing poncho
Size by body height
Reputable manufacturers give a body height range for adult ponchos. At Wave Hawaii, in our range it goes from approx. 151 cm (PENICHE in S) to approx. 195 cm (MOVE in L). You can find all the dimensions in detail in our guide to bathing poncho sizes.
Width for changing
Under the poncho you pull your arms in and swap swimwear for dry clothes. A cut that is too narrow quickly gets tight. For the MOVE, the manufacturer states a circumference of approx. 160 cm; for the AIR, a generous unisex cut with plenty of freedom of movement.
Material to suit the use
For cool days and the sauna, thick cotton terry is cosy. For travelling, lighter fabrics are more practical. Our range includes terry (FARO, AIR, MOVE), AirLite (PENICHE, CUMBUCO) and waffle piqué (PAMPATAR).
Hood
A hood protects your head and neck. On adult ponchos it should be big enough to put on comfortably even with wet, long hair. A drawstring helps in the wind.
Pockets
Keys, phone, cold hands: for adults, pockets are almost indispensable. The FARO, MOVE and PAMPATAR have two side pockets, the AIR one large front pocket, the PENICHE two roomy pockets.
Care
A poncho that often gets wet must be easy to wash. According to the manufacturer, all our Wave Hawaii models are machine washable and suitable for the tumble dryer.
When does a teenager need an adult poncho?
Children's ponchos are usually sold by age or clothing size. At some point the length is no longer enough and the poncho ends at the hips. A good time to switch is when the children's poncho no longer keeps you covered while changing. Our smallest adult model, the AirLite Poncho PENICHE, is intended for body heights from approx. 151 cm according to the manufacturer. This also makes it suitable for many teenagers.
If they are still growing, a model in size M is an alternative. The CUMBUCO, AIR and FARO are specified for approx. 161 to 183 cm and therefore fit over several years of growth. At first the poncho will be a little longer, which is more of an advantage when changing. Just make sure it does not get in the way when walking.

Bathing poncho for adults: typical uses
- Outdoor pool and swimming lake: change on the lawn when the cubicles are occupied.
- Family outings: parents keep their hands free while the children are being dried.
- Sauna: between sessions in the sauna garden, not in the cabin.
- Surfing, SUP and lake swimming: as a mobile changing room on the shore.
- Camping and travel: on the way to the shower and back.
Bathing poncho or just a large towel?
Many adults wonder whether a large bath towel is not enough. For drying off, yes. For changing in public, however, a poncho is much more relaxed because it does not slip and both hands stay free. You can find the detailed comparison with pros and cons in our article linked below.
A bathing poncho for adults in the family
On family trips to the water, it has proven useful for everyone to have their own poncho. Children get a children's model, adults a model to suit their height. Couples of similar height can share a poncho – in our range, size M covers roughly 161 to 183 cm. Of course you cannot both use it at the same time: anyone who waits for the poncho to become free after swimming will get cold. A second poncho or a large towel as a backup is therefore sensible.
What a bathing poncho for adults does not do
- No rain protection: our ponchos are made mostly or entirely of cotton and are not waterproof.
- No substitute for a sauna towel: in the cabin, a sauna towel goes under your body; the poncho stays outside.
- Not a bathrobe for home: for breakfast or reading, a bathrobe is usually more comfortable because it can be opened.
Common mistakes when buying
- Too small a size: if you are at the upper end of the range, you get a short poncho.
- Buying on looks alone: material and weight determine how often you will really take the poncho with you.
- Underestimating pockets: without a pocket, there is no safe place for your key.
