Smoothie to go: fresh, cold and clean in a stainless steel bottle

A smoothie to go is quickly made: fruit, a few vegetables, some liquid, a short spin in the blender – done. The tricky part comes afterwards. As soon as the drink is in your bag it warms up, separates, and by the evening there is a residue in the bottle that already smells slightly sour. This guide is about exactly that part: how to take your smoothie along in a stainless steel bottle, how to keep it cold, how long it should stay on the go and why cleaning right after the last sip is the most important step.

Why a stainless steel bottle for your smoothie to go?

For the way to work, university or the gym there are plenty of containers: disposable cups from the café, plastic shakers, screw-top jars or the blender cups that come with some stand mixers. An insulated stainless steel bottle has one clear advantage on the go: it keeps the contents cool, even if your bag sits in the sun or lies under your desk in a warm office.

Both of our IZY bottles are made of double-walled stainless steel that does not rust. According to the manufacturer, cold drinks stay cold for up to 24 hours. In addition, no condensation forms on the outside, so your laptop and papers stay dry. According to the product description, the stainless steel is taste-neutral and BPA-free – so yesterday’s coffee should not come through in today’s fruit drink, provided the bottle has been washed properly.

Preparing a smoothie to go: how to keep it fresh

Whether your drink still tastes good at lunchtime is decided while blending. A few habits make the difference.

Start with cold ingredients

The colder the ingredients, the longer the result stays cool. Take fruit and vegetables straight from the fridge and use chilled water, juice or cold milk or plant-based drink. A few ice cubes or frozen berries in the blender lower the temperature further. An insulated bottle can only keep cold, not create it – what goes in lukewarm stays lukewarm.

Pre-chill the bottle

Fill the empty bottle with ice water about five minutes before pouring and screw it shut. This way the inner wall absorbs the cold before the smoothie goes in. Then pour out the water and fill straight away. It takes hardly any time and keeps things noticeably cooler through the morning.

Do not fill to the brim

Leave some space at the top. For one thing, you can then shake the bottle before drinking so that pulp and liquid combine again. For another, nothing ends up in the thread when you screw on the lid. A clean thread is the precondition for the leak-proof screw cap to really seal.

Adjust the consistency

Very thick mixtures of banana, oats or nut butter are hard to drink from a bottle and even harder to clean. For the road it is worth making the mix a little thinner: a bit more water, juice or milk. Berry seeds and fibres from leafy greens get finer if you blend a little longer. If you prefer to spoon rather than drink, a screw-top jar or a box with a wide opening is the better choice.

How long can a smoothie stay on the go?

Freshly blended fruit and vegetables are a living food. Blending opens up cells, enzymes and oxygen get to work, the colour darkens and the taste changes. With milk, yoghurt or plant-based drinks there is the additional factor that these ingredients spoil faster in the warmth.

A general rule of thumb that has proven itself: drink your smoothie the same morning or at the latest during the day, and do not leave it in the bottle overnight. The insulation buys you time, but it does not replace a fridge for long. If something smells or tastes fermented, sour or “fizzy”, the rest belongs down the drain.

Watch out for fermentation

If a smoothie stays warm for a long time, yeasts can start converting sugar. This produces gas, and pressure builds up in a tightly closed bottle. If you find a forgotten bottle, open it slowly, with the opening pointing away from you, ideally over the sink. That is exactly why fruit drinks should not be forgotten in your bag for days.

IngredientRather uncomplicated on the goRather tricky on the go
Liquidwater, juice, coconut watermilk, yoghurt, kefir
Fruitberries, apple, mangovery ripe banana (browns quickly)
Vegetablescucumber, spinach, carrotlarge amounts of leafy greens (settle)
Extraslemon juice, mint, gingeroats, chia seeds, nut butter (thicken over time)

Clean immediately: the most important step

If we had to highlight one thing from this article, it would be this: rinse the bottle as soon as it is empty. Pulp, fibres and milk residue dry onto the inner wall and the thread. What comes out in a minute when fresh takes much longer once dried on – and leaves odours behind.

On the go: a quick rinse

If there is no sink nearby, fill the bottle a third full with water, screw it shut and shake vigorously. Pour out the water and repeat. This does not replace proper cleaning, but it stops residue from sticking until the evening. Rinse the lid at the same time.

At home: thoroughly by hand

  1. Fill with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid.
  2. Clean the bottom, walls and neck with a bottle brush.
  3. Clean the lid and thread separately with a small brush – fruit fibres like to collect here.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clear water.
  5. Let the bottle and lid dry separately and open; only then screw them back together.

According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles do not belong in the dishwasher, so that the design surface and insulation last a long time. With smoothies, washing by hand makes sense anyway, because a brush loosens dried-on fibres better than any dishwasher cycle. You can find more about hygiene in our guide to water bottles in summer.

Smoothie to go in everyday life: three typical situations

On the way to the office

Blend in the morning, fill the pre-chilled bottle, into the bag. Because the outside stays dry, the bottle can sit next to your laptop and papers. Shake briefly at your desk before drinking. Rinse after the last sip and simply refill with water at lunchtime.

After sport

Many people like to drink their smoothie straight after training. A version without dairy works particularly well for this, because it can stay in the sports bag longer. Do not pack the bottle next to wet towels in the sun, but in a shaded compartment if possible.

After the sauna

A cool fruit drink is also an option for a break on a sauna day. After the sauna, water or unsweetened tea is usually the first choice against thirst; a small smoothie fits better into a longer rest phase or as a snack. Make sure the bottle does not stand for hours in the warm changing room.

Which IZY bottle suits you?

Both models in our shop hold 500 ml – a good amount for one smoothie portion. They differ mainly in design:

An honest note: both bottles have a slim shape. They are not intended for very thick, spoonable mixtures. For drinkable smoothies, juices, infused water or iced tea, however, they work well. You can find all models in our IZY water bottle collection.

Conclusion

A smoothie to go stays fresh if you keep three things in mind: cold ingredients and a pre-chilled bottle, a drinkable consistency and a manageable time until you finish it. The decisive step comes afterwards – rinse the bottle immediately and clean it thoroughly by hand in the evening. Then a stainless steel bottle stays odour-free and ready to use, even after many fruit drinks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fill a smoothie into the bottle the evening before?

Better not. It tastes best freshly blended, and with dairy products a night in the bottle is not a good idea. If you are in a hurry in the morning, prepare the ingredients the evening before and keep them in the fridge; blend just before you leave.

Does the fruit drink attack the stainless steel?

According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles are made of stainless steel that does not rust. Fruit acid in ordinary drinks is unproblematic in everyday use, as long as you rinse the bottle after use and do not leave residue in it for days.

How do I get dried-on residue out of the bottle?

Fill with warm water and a little mild washing-up liquid, let it soak for a while and then loosen with a bottle brush. Clean the lid and thread separately. Then let it dry open.

Can the bottle go in the dishwasher?

No. According to the manufacturer, the IZY bottles should be cleaned by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid to protect the surface and insulation.

How much does the bottle hold?

Both IZY models in our shop hold 500 ml. Leave a little air at the top so that you can shake before drinking.
