How good is tap water in Germany?
Quality is regulated by the German Drinking Water Ordinance (Trinkwasserverordnung). It specifies the requirements tap water must meet, how it is treated and how it is monitored. There are limit values for many substances – including nitrate, lead, copper and uranium.
According to the consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale), large water suppliers must check their water several times a day, and the health authorities monitor compliance. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, tap water meets the legal requirements in over 99 percent of cases. According to the German Environment Agency, the rare exceptions mainly concern very small supply systems.
Who is responsible for what?
A point many people don't know: responsibility is shared.
| Section | Responsible | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| From the waterworks to the water meter | Water supplier | Read the water quality information from your supplier |
| From the water meter inside the building | Building owner | In rented flats, contact your landlord with questions |
| Tap, bottle, glass | You | Draw water fresh, keep containers clean |
So the pipes in the building have a big influence on how the water arrives in your glass. According to the German Environment Agency, work on the domestic installation should only be carried out by approved specialist companies.
Drinking tap water: the most important everyday rules
Let it run first, then draw
Water that has been standing in the pipe for more than four hours is called stagnant water. The German Environment Agency advises not to use such water for drinking or cooking, but to let it run off first. A simple guide: fresh water feels noticeably cooler. The Verbraucherzentrale gives up to 30 seconds as a rule of thumb.
Typical situations for this are:
- in the morning after getting up,
- when you come home from work,
- after a weekend or holiday – then let it run a little longer.
You don't have to waste the first water: catch it and use it for watering plants, cleaning or washing up.
Only cold water for drinking
For drinking and cooking, cold water from the cold-water pipe is the usual choice. Hot water has often been standing longer in the tank and pipes. If you need hot water for tea, heat cold water in the kettle instead.
Keep the aerator clean
The small sieve at the end of the tap collects particles and limescale. Unscrew it from time to time and rinse it out. Especially with hard water, it clogs up over time and the water then flows unevenly from the tap.
Old lead pipes: what you should know
Lead in water almost always comes from old domestic pipes. According to the German Environment Agency, a limit of 0.01 milligrams per litre has applied to lead since December 2013, which will drop to 0.005 milligrams from 13 January 2028. Landlords had to replace or decommission known lead pipes by 12 January 2026.
The German Environment Agency points out that lead is particularly harmful to pregnant women, infants and young children. If the limit is exceeded, the water should not be used for drinking or cooking until the pipes have been replaced. The German Environment Agency does not consider lead filters to be useful.
If you live in an old building and are unsure, ask your landlord. For health questions, seek medical advice.
Having your own water tested?
In most cases this isn't necessary, because water suppliers must provide information on quality. A test can make sense if you suspect old pipes or if the smell, colour or taste suddenly changes. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, you can find laboratories, for example, via lists from the state authorities. Not every laboratory offers analyses for private individuals, so it's worth calling ahead and comparing prices.
Special recommendations apply to baby food. It's best to ask your midwife or paediatric practice about this.
From the tap into the bottle
Anyone who drinks water from the tap usually takes it with them too – to work, to sport or to the sauna. To keep it fresh:
- Let it run briefly until the water comes out cool, then fill up.
- Fill fresh every day. Pour away yesterday's water instead of topping it up for days.
- Use a clean bottle. Rinse it daily and let it dry open.
- Carry it cool. A double-walled bottle keeps your water at temperature for a long time. According to the manufacturer, our IZY bottles keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours.
- No condensation in your bag. With our IZY bottles, according to the product description, the insulation prevents condensation on the outside.
If plain water is too boring for you, a few slices of lemon, cucumber or fresh mint add variety. How to use your bottle on hot days is explained in water bottle in summer.
Taste, filters and fizz
- Taste: Water tastes different depending on the region, for example because of its content of dissolved minerals. Well chilled, many people find it fresher.
- Filters: A filter is not necessary for flawless tap water. If you use a jug filter, change the cartridges as specified by the manufacturer so that the filter doesn't become a hygiene problem itself.
- Fizz: With a water carbonator you can turn tap water into sparkling water. Whether your water or thermos bottle is suitable for carbonated drinks depends on the manufacturer's information.
Tap water on holiday and on the go
Within Germany, you can usually drink tap water anywhere – at home, at public drinking fountains or in many cafés on request. Abroad, conditions are different. Find out in advance whether the water at your destination is recommended as drinking water. Always observe notices such as “kein Trinkwasser” (not drinking water) on taps, for example at campsites or on trains.

Conclusion
Tap water in Germany is strictly monitored and, as a rule, safe to drink. What you can contribute yourself: let water that has been standing in the pipe for more than four hours run off first, use only cold water for drinking, keep the aerator clean and ask about old pipes in the building. Filled into a clean, insulated bottle, it accompanies you fresh through the day.
Frequently asked questions
Is tap water in Germany drinkable?
As a rule, yes. According to the German Environment Agency, drinking water is one of the most closely monitored foods. However, the owner is responsible for the pipes inside the building.
How long should I let the water run?
Until it comes out of the tap noticeably cool. The Verbraucherzentrale gives up to 30 seconds as a rule of thumb, a little longer after a longer absence.
How can I recognise lead pipes?
That's hard for laypeople to judge. If you live in an old building, ask your landlord or have the water tested by a laboratory.
Do I need a water filter?
Not for flawless tap water. The German Environment Agency does not consider filters useful against lead. If you filter anyway, change the cartridges regularly.
How long can I keep water in the bottle?
It's best to drink it the same day. Rinse the bottle in the evening and fill it fresh in the morning.
