What does a sauna towel cost? The market overview

A look at a large price comparison site shows the range: classic terry sauna towels measuring 80 × 200 cm cost roughly between €23 and €55 there in October 2026. Small seat towels are available from around €9, sauna kilts cost around €30. Our hammam towels measuring 180 × 100 cm cost between €21.90 and €32.90 depending on weight and finish.

Important: prices change, and special offers shift the range. Still, these figures are a useful guide to what a sauna towel costs at a fair price.

What determines the price of a sauna towel

Two towels of the same size can cost very different amounts. These factors explain the difference:

  • Material: 100 % cotton is standard for sauna towels. Blended fabrics or microfibre are often cheaper but feel different.
  • Weight and density: a densely woven towel needs more yarn. The DOTWAVE sauna towel XL, for example, weighs approx. 900–950 g, a light hammam towel such as ADRIA approx. 290 g.
  • Size: XL and XXL formats cost more than standard sizes.
  • Finish: hand-knotted fringes or weaving on traditional looms take more effort than industrial production.
  • Certificates: tested textiles, for example with OEKO-TEX certification, come at a price.
  • Extras: a sewn-in lounger pocket or gift packaging increase the price.
  • Brand: well-known names often carry a premium without the towel automatically being better.

Sauna towel price per use: a worked example

The purchase price alone says little. It is more interesting to know what a towel costs you per sauna visit. A simple example:

  • You use a €30 towel every week for two years. That is around 104 sauna visits – about €0.29 per visit.
  • A €60 towel with the same use costs about €0.58 per visit.
  • If you only go to the sauna four times a year, the €30 towel costs you about €3.75 per visit over two years.

The calculation shows: for regular sauna-goers the difference per visit is small. If you rarely go, a cheaper towel will do. Compared with a rental towel, your own towel also pays for itself quickly if you go regularly, because rental towels cost extra at many facilities.

When a more expensive towel is worth it

  • You go regularly: a towel you use and wash every week should be robustly made.
  • You want a particular extra: for example the lounger pocket of the StayOn or the heavy, dense feel of the DOTWAVE XL.
  • You are tall: longer towels cost more but save you an extra towel for your feet.
  • You are giving it as a gift: a special design or nice packaging turns a towel into a present.

When a cheaper towel is enough

  • as a second towel for drying off,
  • for occasional sauna visits,
  • for the sports bag, where it mainly needs to be light,
  • for children or guests.

Follow-up costs: care is part of the price

Besides the purchase price, care determines how long a towel lasts and what it costs you in everyday life. A heavy towel takes up more space in the washing machine and longer to dry. In our experience at the Meri Sauna, light hammam towels dry in about 30 minutes in the sun and about 60 minutes indoors – without a dryer. According to the care instructions, our hammam towels are washed at 30 °C without fabric softener, the HOMELEVEL sauna towel at 40 °C, and the DOTWAVE may go in the dryer at a low temperature. If you follow the care instructions, your towel lasts longer – which puts the price into perspective over the years. A cheap towel that frays quickly often ends up costing more than a solid towel at a slightly higher price.

Save with a set

If you need several towels, you pay less in a set. The Hammam towel set Single with two Ocean towels and one StayOn costs €89.90 instead of €104.70 individually – you save €14.80. The Hammam towel set Couple with four Ocean towels and two StayOn costs €169.90 instead of €209.40 and saves €39.50.

How to recognise quality regardless of price

A high price alone says nothing about quality. When unpacking and after the first few washes, look out for these points:

  1. Even weave: no thin spots when you hold the towel up to the light.
  2. Clean edges: hem or fringes are firm, nothing comes loose after the first wash.
  3. Honest information: size, material and care instructions are clearly stated.
  4. Feel after washing: cotton may feel a little firmer at first. With hammam towels it is normal for them to get softer with each wash.

Conclusion

You can get a good sauna towel made of 100 % cotton from about €20. Classic sauna towels usually cost between just over €20 and around €55 in the shops. With more money you mainly buy weight, size, handcraft or extras such as a lounger pocket. Convert the price into your sauna visits: for regular sauna-goers a more expensive towel makes hardly any difference per visit, while for occasional visitors a cheaper model is often enough. And if you need several towels, you save with a set.

Frequently asked questions

What does a good sauna towel cost?

You can get a solid sauna towel made of 100 % cotton from about €20. In a large price comparison in October 2026, classic terry sauna towels measuring 80 × 200 cm cost roughly between €23 and €55.

Is an expensive sauna towel automatically better?

Not automatically. What matters is the material, the finish and whether the towel suits how you use it. Part of the price may also be down to the brand.

Why are hammam towels often cheaper than thick sauna towels?

Flat-woven hammam towels need less yarn than heavy, dense towels. In return, they are lighter and dry faster.

Is it worth having your own towel instead of renting one?

If you go to the sauna regularly, usually yes, as rental towels cost extra at many facilities. If you go very rarely, renting can be more convenient.

Where do I save most on a sauna towel?

With a set. With the Hammam towel set Couple you save €39.50 compared with buying the towels individually.
