Vegan gifts: what to look out for

With food, the topic is well known. With cosmetics, candles, clothing and decorations, on the other hand, animal materials are often hidden in unexpected places. A quick look at the label and the INCI list helps you avoid mistakes. The following overview shows the most common pitfalls:

Animal substanceWhere it is often foundHow to recognise it
Wool, cashmere, angorablankets, scarves, bathrobesmaterial details on the label
Silkscarves, sleep masks, gift ribbonslabel "Seide" or "Silk"
Down, leathercushions, bags, casesmaterial details, leather symbol
Beeswaxcandles, lip care, wax wrapsINCI "Cera Alba" or "Beeswax"
Honeyskincare, bath additivesINCI "Mel"
Wool wax (lanolin)hand creams, lip balmINCI "Lanolin"
Carminered colour in cosmetics"CI 75470" in the INCI list

With cosmetics, a clear vegan label is the easiest guide. We explain in detail what the various labels mean and where their limits lie in our guide to vegan cosmetics. Here, the question is what you can actually give.

Vegan gifts beyond food: ideas from skincare and textiles

Skincare products and textiles have one big advantage: they get used, not just looked at. All VEGAN FOX products in our shop are vegan; the MAHINA hammam towel, the Diamant mini hammam towel and the Trimita Barok bathrobe are made of cotton according to the product details, i.e. a plant fibre.

Head-to-toe care set – the big skincare gift

The head-to-toe care set for €79.90 contains eight vegan products from VEGAN FOX: three shower gels in linden blossom, grapefruit and red grape, cleansing foam for normal skin, a gel facial peel with 2.5 % lactic acid, face cream, Nourishing hand cream and foot cream. Individually, the products cost €87.47; in the set you save €7.57. Good to know: the shower gels and some creams contain fragrances. If someone reacts very sensitively to scents, check the INCI lists of the individual products beforehand.

Peeling trio – three scents for the shower

The VEGAN FOX peeling trio for €29.90 contains three body scrubs of 300 g each: ginger, peppermint and coffee. All three are based on salt, apricot kernel powder and nourishing oils with shea butter and come in tins with an aluminium screw lid. Individually they cost €38.70 together; in the trio you save €8.80. That makes the trio one of the vegan gifts for anyone who likes to take their time in the shower.

MAHINA hammam towel – textiles made from plant fibre

Instead of a wool blanket or a silk scarf: the MAHINA hammam towel for €32.90 is made of flat-woven cotton and measures approx. 180 × 100 cm without fringes. It is a special edition for BeachAndSteam with stripes, a diamond pattern and grey fringes, available in red-grey, sage-grey and pink-grey. It is used in the sauna, as a large bath towel or as a light sofa throw. It is washed at 30 °C, without fabric softener and bleach, and dries best in the air.

Feierabend-Ritual – textiles and skincare combined

For a bigger gift, the Feierabend-Ritual for €86.99 combines both: a Trimita Barok bathrobe made of 100 % Turkish cotton (S/M or L/XL), a Barok hammam towel measuring 180 × 100 cm in the same colour and a vegan VEGAN FOX shower gel (200 ml) in the scent of your choice. Compared with buying them individually, you save €3.90. The bathrobe and towel are much lighter than terry cloth and dry quickly.

Little treats

Small vegan gifts under €20 also go down well:

  • Shower gel (200 ml) for €4.99: three scents to choose from, ideal for Secret Santa or as an addition to a card.
  • Hand cream (120 ml) for €10.90: with mango butter and avocado oil or with shea butter and macadamia – without wool wax.
  • Diamant mini hammam towel for €15.90: approx. 90 × 45 cm, made of OEKO-TEX certified cotton, as a guest towel, hair towel or kitchen towel.

Vegan gifts by occasion

Different ideas suit different occasions. A few examples from our range:

  • Birthday: a hammam towel plus a shower gel in the gift box is personal without being too big.
  • Christmas: vegan gifts for the whole family can easily be put together from shower gels in three scents; for your partner, it can be the Feierabend-Ritual.
  • Moving into a first home: mini hammam towels as guest or kitchen towels are needed straight away.
  • Saying thank you: a hand cream with a handwritten card is a small but thoughtful gesture.

Our tip: if in doubt, ask carefully. Some vegan people mainly pay attention to ingredients, others also to labels or origin. Vegan gifts that match these personal criteria go down best.

What "vegan" means for textiles

For cosmetics there are established vegan labels; for textiles the situation is less clear. There is no binding legal definition. The most important question is therefore the material: cotton, linen or hemp are plant fibres; wool, silk and down come from animals. With dyes, finishes and adhesives, it is often impossible to tell from the outside what was used. If you want to be completely sure when choosing vegan gifts made of textiles, look for an explicit vegan label.

An honest assessment: our textiles do not carry their own vegan label. According to the product details, however, MAHINA, the Diamant mini hammam towel and the Trimita Barok bathrobe are made of cotton; wool or silk are not listed as materials. For many vegan people, that is the decisive criterion. You can read what labels such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS check for textiles in our guide to hammam towels with OEKO-TEX, GOTS or organic labels.

Making the wrapping vegan

The wrapping also counts with vegan gifts. A few simple rules:

  • Box instead of foil: our Eukalyptus Grün gift box for €6.50 is made of sturdy cardboard, measures 32 × 23 × 9 cm and has room for a folded hammam towel and one or two skincare products.
  • Check ribbons: real silk ribbons are rare, but they do exist. Cotton cord or paper ribbon are the safe choice.
  • No wax seal: sealing wax can contain beeswax or shellac. A sticker or stamp looks just as nice.
  • Card with a message: a line like "Everything inside is plant-based" shows that you have given it some thought.

If you want to put the box together yourself, you'll find more ideas in our gift ideas for sauna & wellness.

Conclusion

Good vegan gifts don't have to be edible. Skincare without animal ingredients and cotton textiles get used in everyday life and show that you take the lifestyle seriously. Look out for hidden substances such as beeswax, lanolin, carmine, wool or silk, and think of wrapping without animal materials. From a little treat for €4.99 to the Feierabend-Ritual for €86.99, you'll find a suitable idea for every budget.

Frequently asked questions

What do you give vegans, apart from food?

Vegan skincare products, textiles made from plant fibres such as cotton, experiences or vouchers. The important thing is that no animal materials such as wool, silk, leather or beeswax are included.

Are cotton towels vegan?

Cotton is a plant fibre. With dyes and finishes, it is not always possible to tell from the outside what was used. For many vegans the material is the decisive criterion; if you want to be completely sure, look for a vegan label.

How do I recognise vegan cosmetics?

Most easily by a vegan label. A look at the INCI list for substances such as Cera Alba (beeswax), Lanolin, Mel (honey) or CI 75470 (carmine) also helps.

Is a beeswax candle a good gift for vegans?

Not really, because beeswax is an animal product. Candles made of rapeseed or soy wax are an alternative.

Can I give vegans something scented?

Yes, fragrances are not automatically animal-derived. With sensitive skin, it is still a good idea to look at the INCI list, because some people do not tolerate certain fragrances.
