Shaving before the sauna or after? Timing, methods and care

Shaving before the sauna or rather afterwards? The question sounds trivial, but it often decides whether your sauna day is relaxing or your skin burns. Freshly shaved skin is sensitive, and heat, sweat and a salt infusion can make this even worse. In this guide you will learn which timing suits shaving, epilating and waxing, what applies to face and body, how to shave gently after the sauna and which care makes sense afterwards.

Shaving before the sauna: before or after?

The short answer: for most people it is most comfortable to shave the day before or only after the last sauna session. Directly before the first session is the least favourable time.

The reason: when shaving, a blade removes not only hair but also part of the top layer of skin. This often causes tiny injuries that you can hardly see. If heat and salty sweat are added afterwards, this can burn, itch or lead to redness. If you are also planning a salt infusion or a scrub, you will feel it even more clearly.

After the sauna things are different. Warmth and moisture make hair and skin soft, and the blade glides more easily. However, the skin is then still warm and well supplied with blood. So the rule is: cool down completely first, then shave.

Shaving, epilating, waxing: what applies when?

Wet shaving

The blade works directly on the skin surface and irritates it the most. Plan it for the day before or after the sauna. If you want to shave on the sauna day itself, it is best done at home after the last session.

Dry shaving with an electric razor

An electric razor is considered gentler on the skin because it touches the skin less directly. It works best on dry skin, i.e. before showering. Here too, though: going straight into the heat afterwards is not ideal for sensitive skin.

Epilating and waxing

With epilating and waxing, hairs are removed including the root. The skin often reacts with redness and small dots. It is frequently recommended to wait one to two days before going to the sauna after such a treatment. If you had it done in a studio, ask there for their specific recommendation.

Hair removal cream

Hair removal creams dissolve the hair chemically and can also irritate the skin. Follow the instructions on the pack and do not use it immediately before your sauna visit.

Face or body: differences when shaving

Shaving your beard

Many men shave in the morning and want to go to the sauna in the afternoon. This is usually not a problem because the skin has had a few hours of rest by then. It only becomes tricky if you shave directly before the sauna session or your skin tends to get razor burn anyway. In that case, better shave after the sauna day. In any case, a few hours should pass between shaving and the sauna. What a simple care routine for men's skin looks like is explained in our article on skincare for men.

Legs and armpits

The skin here is usually a little more robust. Still, you sweat a lot, especially in the armpits, and freshly shaved areas can burn. Shaving the evening before is a good compromise. Shaving and sauna directly one after the other is not worth it here either.

Intimate area

The skin in the intimate area is particularly sensitive; ingrown hairs and redness are common. Since you sit on your towel in the sauna and sweat a lot there, a fresh shave directly beforehand is the most uncomfortable. It is best to leave one to two days between shaving and the sauna here. By the way: whether and how you shave is entirely your private matter. Nobody has to be shaved to go to the sauna.

Shaving after the sauna: step by step

  1. Let it cool down: After the last session, cool down thoroughly and rest until your skin is no longer red.
  2. Shower: Wash off sweat with lukewarm water and a mild shower gel. The VEGAN FOX shower gel with aloe vera, panthenol and betaine is made for daily use according to the manufacturer.
  3. Apply shaving foam or gel: A glide film protects the skin and lifts the hairs.
  4. Shave with the grain: Against the grain only if necessary, and then in a second, careful pass.
  5. Use a sharp blade: If you have to press, it is too dull.
  6. Rinse cool and pat dry: Do not rub; pat dry with a clean towel.
  7. Care: A mild cream instead of a stinging aftershave.

A note on house rules: shaving in the sauna shower is unwelcome in many baths. Check beforehand or postpone shaving until you are at home.

Care around shaving and the sauna

For the face, a simple routine makes sense. The VEGAN FOX cleansing foam for normal skin (200 ml, with chamomile, glycerin and lactic acid) is intended for daily cleansing morning and evening according to the product description and can be used before the sauna and after the last session.

Afterwards, the VEGAN FOX face cream with almond oil, avocado oil, chamomile and panthenol (50 ml) provides a supple skin feel. According to the manufacturer, you only apply it after the sauna once your skin has cooled down, on the cleansed skin of face and neck. For freshly shaved skin: rather pat in a small amount gently than massage it in vigorously.

If you also want to use a body scrub: according to the manufacturer, the VEGAN FOX scrubs are not suitable directly after hair removal. You will find more care products in our VEGAN FOX care collection.

Common mistakes when shaving around the sauna

  • Shaving and scrubbing right after each other: Both stress the skin. Together with heat and salt, burning is almost inevitable.
  • Dull blade: It pulls at the hairs and causes more small injuries.
  • Shaving on skin that is still hot: Going straight from the cabin to the razor is too early. Cool down first.
  • Alcohol-based aftershave: On freshly shaved, warm skin it often stings. A mild cream is the gentler choice.
  • Scratching red patches: Cool instead of scratching, and leave the area alone until the next shave.

With inflamed areas, ingrown hairs that do not heal or other skin problems: for health questions, seek medical advice before going to the sauna.

Conclusion

Shaving before the sauna is possible, but directly before the first session it is rarely pleasant: freshly shaved skin often reacts to heat, sweat and salt with burning. It is better to shave the day before or after the last sauna session, once your skin has cooled down. After epilating or waxing, it is best to wait one to two days. With a sharp blade, shaving foam, a cool rinse and mild care, your skin stays calm.

Frequently asked questions

Should you shave before the sauna?

Better not directly beforehand. Shaving and sauna immediately one after the other is unpleasant for most people: freshly shaved skin can burn and redden in the heat. Shave the day before or after the last sauna session instead.

Why does freshly shaved skin burn in the sauna?

Shaving often causes tiny injuries to the top layer of skin. Salty sweat, heat and a salt infusion irritate these areas further.

How long after waxing can I go to the sauna?

It is often recommended to wait one to two days until the skin has calmed down. Ask the studio for the specific recommendation for your treatment.

May I shave in the sauna shower?

That is governed by the house rules. In many saunas, shaving in the communal showers is unwelcome. If in doubt, shave at home.

Do I have to be shaved to go to the sauna?

No. Body hair is a private matter. All that matters is showering thoroughly before the first session and a towel that you sit or lie on completely.
