Hammam towel or terry towel? The honest comparison for bathroom, sauna and travel

Hammam towel or terry towel – which one suits you better? Both are usually made of cotton, but they feel completely different in everyday use. Everyone knows the fluffy terry towel from their own bathroom. The flat-woven hammam towel is lighter, dries faster and takes up hardly any space. In this comparison we honestly go through absorbency, drying, weight, feel, care and uses – with an overview table and a clear decision guide.

The difference lies in the weave

The decisive difference is not the material but the way it is woven:

  • Terry has lots of small loops on the surface. They increase the surface area, absorb a lot of water and create the typical fluffy, thick feel.
  • A hammam towel is flat-woven – without loops. The surface is smooth, the towel thinner and lighter. Stripes or geometric patterns and fringes at the ends are typical.

Almost all the pros and cons follow from this one difference. Once you understand the weave, you can quickly answer the question of hammam towel or terry for yourself.

Absorbency: where terry is ahead

We'll be honest here: per drying, a thick terry towel absorbs more water. The loops simply offer more surface. A hammam towel made of good cotton still absorbs reliably – it just feels thinner and gets "full" faster if you dry yourself completely after a shower and have long hair.

In practice a small change helps: pat dry instead of rubbing, and use a second, small towel for long hair. A new hammam towel also absorbs noticeably better after the first few washes, because the fibres open up.

Drying and smell: the hammam towel's big plus

What is a disadvantage when drying off becomes an advantage afterwards: because the fabric is thin and flat, the moisture evaporates quickly. In our experience from the Meri Sauna, a hammam towel dries in approx. 30 minutes in the sun and approx. 60 minutes indoors. A thick terry towel often needs many times that in the bathroom.

That has consequences in everyday life: a towel that dries quickly smells musty less often – especially in small bathrooms without a window or in winter when the air is humid. And between two sauna sessions or two swims it's ready to use again. How quickly each towel dries and what influences drying time is covered in a separate guide.

Weight and space: light in your luggage

Our hammam towels measuring 180 × 100 cm weigh approx. 270 g (for example SULTAN) to approx. 470 g (Manolia), depending on the model. A terry bath towel of a comparable size is usually much heavier, depending on quality, and takes up many times the space. In our shop we put it like this: two Ocean towels take up less space in your bag than a single terry towel.

That matters in your sauna bag, your hand luggage, your gym locker and your small bathroom shelf. If you're often on the move, you'll notice the difference every time you pack.

Feel: fluffy or smooth?

Terry feels soft and cosy – that's its biggest trump card and the reason many people stick with it for bath towels. A hammam towel feels different: smoother, cooler, a little stiffer at first. With every wash the cotton becomes softer and more supple. Many people like the light, airy feel especially on warm skin after the sauna or sun.

Whether you prefer a hammam towel or terry is ultimately a matter of taste. A good test: use a towel in everyday life for a week, not just touch it once.

Care compared

  • Washing: You wash our hammam towels at 30 °C. Terry often tolerates higher temperatures, depending on the label.
  • Fabric softener: Better to leave it out for both – it coats the fibres and reduces absorbency.
  • Drying: Hammam towels are best air-dried. Terry gets fluffier in the tumble dryer but takes longer on the line.
  • First wash: Wash hammam towels before first use so they become more absorbent.

Switching made easy: 4 tips for the first weeks

  1. Wash before first use: Once at 30 °C so the fibres open up.
  2. Pat instead of rubbing: That's how the flat fabric absorbs moisture best.
  3. Plan two towels: One for the body, a smaller one for the hair – for example the Mini hammam towel measuring 90 × 45 cm.
  4. Hang it up instead of scrunching it: Spread out over a rail or line, the towel makes full use of its drying advantage.

After two or three weeks your skin has got used to the smoother feel – and the towel has become noticeably softer through washing.

Decision guide: hammam towel or terry for you?

A hammam towel suits you if you …

  • often go to the sauna, swimming pool, gym or beach,
  • want to pack light or travel with hand luggage,
  • have a small bathroom without a window where towels dry badly,
  • are looking for one towel for many purposes – towel, beach towel, blanket, pareo.

Terry suits you better if you …

  • want to snuggle into something thick and warm after a shower,
  • want maximum absorbency in one go,
  • use towels almost only at home and have plenty of cupboard space.

The combination

Many people use both: terry for cosy moments at home, hammam towels for everything on the go. If you want to switch, it's best to start with an all-rounder such as the Ocean hammam towel (180 × 100 cm, 100% cotton, six colours). For sauna-goers, the Hammam towel set Single with two Ocean towels and one StayOn, which is pulled over the backrest of the lounger with a pocket, is worthwhile.

Conclusion

Hammam towel or terry is not a question of belief but of use. Terry wins on cosiness and on absorbency in one go. The hammam towel wins on drying, weight, space, sand and versatility. If you're often on the move, go to the sauna or have a small bathroom, you'll usually be happier with the flat-woven towel – and you can still keep the terry towel for Sunday evenings.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hammam towel absorb as well as terry?

Per drying, terry absorbs more water. A hammam towel made of good cotton still absorbs reliably, feels thinner and dries much faster afterwards. Patting instead of rubbing helps.

Why does a new hammam towel feel stiff?

New flat-woven cotton is a little firm at first. After the first few washes at 30 °C without fabric softener it becomes softer and more absorbent.

Is a hammam towel more hygienic than terry?

A towel that dries quickly stays damp for less time and smells musty less often. What matters most, though, is how often you wash your towels.

Can I replace terry completely with hammam towels?

Yes, many people do – especially for sauna, sport and travel. If you like something thick and warm after a shower, keep a terry towel for home.

What size should a hammam towel be as a bath towel?

At 180 × 100 cm you can wrap yourself up completely and lie fully on it on the sauna bench.
