Bathrobe Smells Musty: Causes, Washing and Prevention

Your bathrobe smells musty even though it has only just been washed? That is annoying, but usually easy to explain – and in many cases easy to fix. The typical musty smell almost always comes from moisture that has stayed in the fabric for too long. Why a bathrobe smells musty

A bathrobe is constantly exposed to moisture: after a shower, after the sauna, after swimming. If it then stays damp for a long time, microorganisms find ideal conditions. The result is that familiar cellar smell. The most common causes:

  • Lying damp for too long: for example in the sauna bag, in the laundry basket or in the washing machine after the programme has finished.
  • Not completely dry: The robe feels dry on the outside, but there is still residual moisture in the hood, collar or pockets. In the wardrobe this quickly turns into a musty smell.
  • Poorly ventilated spot: A hook in a small, windowless bathroom that steams up after every shower hardly lets the robe dry.
  • Detergent residue: Too much detergent or fabric softener can build up in the fibres and trap odours.
  • The washing machine itself: If the drum or detergent drawer smells musty, this transfers to the laundry.

The hood: often where it starts

On hooded robes, it is worth taking a close look – or better, a sniff – at the hood. This is where wet hair and traces of shampoo and hair care end up, and because of the double layers of fabric it dries more slowly than the rest. The same applies to the collar and armpits. When your robe smells unpleasant, it often starts right there.

A simple tip: squeeze wet hair briefly with a small towel before putting up the hood, for example with the Mini Hamam Towel Diamant. That way the hood absorbs less water and dries faster afterwards.

Removing a musty smell: step by step

A musty robe usually needs a thorough wash – but always within what the care label allows. For our models, that means washing at a maximum of 30 °C. Higher temperatures are not intended. Here is how to proceed:

  1. Check the washing machine: If the machine itself smells musty, first clean the drum, seal and detergent drawer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Otherwise you will wash the smell straight back in.
  2. Dose correctly: Don't use more detergent than necessary. Too much detergent rinses out less well and can encourage odours.
  3. Wash without fabric softener: For the DOTWAVE, this is what the care instructions specify anyway, so the cotton stays absorbent. Fabric softener can leave residue in the fibres.
  4. Don't overload: A bathrobe needs room in the drum so water and detergent can reach every part.
  5. Extra rinse: If your machine offers it, an extra rinse helps remove detergent residue.
  6. Hang up straight away and dry completely: This is the most important step. A washed robe that lies damp again will soon smell once more.

In stubborn cases, some people turn to household remedies such as baking soda or vinegar. Whether and how this is suitable for your robe depends on the material. Check the care label first and, if in doubt, test on an inconspicuous spot. For the Trimita robes, the manufacturer recommends a mild colour detergent and no bleach.

Drying it fresh: half the battle

Without good drying, even the best wash won't help much. Hang the robe up open with air all around it, open the hood, empty the pockets and hang the belt up separately. The label tells you whether your robe may go in the dryer: according to the care instructions, the DOTWAVE, the Trimita hooded robes and the reversible bathrobe may go in on low heat, the Barok may not. You will find detailed tips in our guide to drying a bathrobe.

Prevention: keeping your robe fresh

To stop your bathrobe from getting musty in the first place, a few everyday habits help:

  • Let it dry after every use: Even if the robe is only slightly damp, it belongs open in an airy place.
  • Two robes in rotation: If you use your robe every day, a second robe gives each one enough time to dry.
  • Wash regularly: How often depends on use. After the sauna or swimming pool, more often than after a shower at home.
  • Light beats heavy: Light robes dry faster and are therefore less prone to mustiness. According to its description, a heavy robe like the DOTWAVE takes longer on the line.
  • Pack your sauna bag airily: Use a separate, breathable bag for the way home and take the robe out as soon as you get home.

Which robes are less prone to it

In principle, any robe can smell musty if it lies damp. But light, quick-drying models are more forgiving. The Trimita Barok is described as quick-drying, as are the muslin models Elephant and Zebra, which according to the manufacturer absorb moisture without becoming clammy. For regular sauna visits, that is a real advantage.

Quick help when there's no time to wash

Sometimes you only notice the smell just as you are about to put the robe on – and there is no time for a wash. It is not a real solution, but in the short term it helps to hang the robe in fresh air, ideally outdoors or by an open window. Moving, dry air lets residual moisture evaporate and softens the impression. Perfume or room spray, on the other hand, only mask the problem and can mix unpleasantly with the smell of the fabric.

At the next opportunity at the latest, the robe should then go into the washing machine – according to the care label and followed by complete drying.

When a new robe is worth it

If a robe still smells unpleasant despite several thorough washes, correct dosing and complete drying, the smell may have settled deep into the fibres. This mainly happens with very old robes that have often been stored damp. A new robe may then be the simpler solution – and a good opportunity to change your drying habits.

Conclusion

If your bathrobe smells musty, it is almost always due to moisture that has stayed in the fabric for too long. First check the washing machine, wash the robe according to the care label with the right dose and without fabric softener, and then dry it completely – especially at the hood, collar and pockets. To prevent it, unpack right after the sauna, hang the robe up open and rotate two robes. You will find light models in our bathrobes category.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bathrobe smell musty after washing?

Usually it lay damp in the drum for too long after washing or did not dry completely. A musty washing machine can also be the cause.

Can I wash a musty bathrobe at a higher temperature?

Only if the care label allows it. According to the care instructions, our bathrobes are washed at a maximum of 30 °C.

Does fabric softener help against a musty smell?

No, rather the opposite. Fabric softener can leave residue in the fibres. According to the care instructions, no fabric softener should be used for the DOTWAVE.

How do I prevent odours after the sauna?

Take the robe out of the bag as soon as you get home, hang it up open and let it dry completely before it goes in the wardrobe.
